Not what I expected after class...

Piper   I agree.  The NDP add to the variety of legitimate political viewpoints; certainly they give "progressives"  (what does that actually mean?) a place to go.  When you compare them to some of the more dubious political movements in the world they're pretty benign,  heck they even have a...

Canadian labour unions take membership dues ($$$) to fund anti-Afghanistan agenda

I don't think its so much "shrugging" as having a clear understanding that the leaders can say whatever they like and nothing much comes of it when the members don't follow.  In theory Sid should be a shoo-in to be elected every time he runs for office in a "union town", in reality he loses...

Canadian labour unions take membership dues ($$$) to fund anti-Afghanistan agenda

Keep in mind that this is a union unit at some business called "Strategic Communications", not Stelco.    You'd pobably be underwhelmed if you found out how many brothers and sisters in the union are pushing this project.  Most union members are far too busy having lives to spend their time...

SUN EDITORIAL: They're on guard for us, too

Are the pistols not maintained at a serviceable level by the RCMP?  ???  The real issue is whether or not the guards are being required to use pistols that are now unreliable or dangerous

NDP calls for immediate withdrawal from Afghanistan

I thought the NDP plan was to "bring the troops home" just long enough to load them onto flights to south Lebanon and/or Darfur.  The issue appears less about bringing them home and more about sending them to the "right" really dangerous place.

The Evacuation of Canadians from Lebanon Thread

I see it as a "Yes we'll rescue you because you're a Canadian citizen, however..." sort of deal, particularly when they knowingly put themselves in harm's way again.  As Canadian citizens I'd imagine there could be a means of "debiting" their "entitlements".

The Evacuation of Canadians from Lebanon Thread

It would be pretty hard to make the case that they don't know they're entering into a danger zone,  with all the risks involved.  I believe there's gotta be a point when the onus shifts to those knowingly putting themselves at risk to deal with the consequences. Rescuing them once is...

A reply to Taliban Jack from Friends DownUnder

Mark     I've gotta agree.  There seems to be an increasing disinterest in, or inability to understand,  anything that requires much reflection or thinking about the longer term.  It doesn't bode well when large numbers of citizens seem to live in the moment.

A reply to Taliban Jack from Friends DownUnder

Jack would probably claim that he's not lying; apparently Australia is withdrawing the "special forces" from Afghanistan (and replacing them with twice as many other troops). His comments are misleading/deceptive, however that's Jack's nature.

    CBSA arming

Apparently BSOs are paid something in the range of $55,000 per year, whereas a Mountie is paid about $70,000,  so it appears the jobs are not considered equivalent and having a sidearm issued probably doesn't close the gap.  There are all sorts of issues in determining what a particular job...

    CBSA arming

I think the Customs and Excise Union is going to be pretty careful in how it uses the arming of the Customs Officers.  If it tries to use it as a claim that large pay increases are justified because they're become defacto police officers the public may well demand that the training...

NDP calls for immediate withdrawal from Afghanistan

I believe a large part of being the leader of the NDP is keeping the lunatic fringe under control.  From our perspective Jack doesn't make much sense, however he looks like an elder statesman in comparison to some elements on the far left in the NDP.  Zipperhead-cop may well be right when he...

    CPAC talk politics show

I heard Karzai give a speech today on the presence of Canadian troops in Afghanistan.  He expressed considerable gratitude for the efforts being made by the CF in Afghanistan and so, going on the premise that he has a greater interest in the future of Afghanistan than Jack Layton,  or various...

Canadians killed at 'disproportionately' higher rate than NATO allies: report

Staples is probably seen as a reliable source of a quick, and edgy, soundbite.  He's far more useful to the media than someone who'd say "well...there are various things that have to be considered before...".  A reputable analyst would point out the various issues involved in committing troops...

28 Oct 06: Day of Protest Against the CF (& Canadian war crimes against an occupied people)

Given the numbers of members of the various union "endorsers" it'll be interesting to see how many tens of thousands people show up. The union leadership can never bring out the bodies when it counts, or even in this case. Wasn't the "Juarez" guy the dropout who was being groomed for...

Liberals Diss PM on His Comments on AFG Mission

World Socialists Comments on CAN Msn in AFG

You've gotta be concerned when the "World Socialists" weigh in ;)    Being lectured by them is sorta like being gored by Bambi; it may happen but who the h*ll cares

Canadians killed at 'disproportionately' higher rate than NATO allies: report

I'd love to see how Staples allowed for the massive difference in the size of the the forces involved.  Canada has around 2,000 in Afghanistan while the Yanks have  had hundreds of thousands in Iraq.  It follows that the loss of a Canadian is proportionately more severe than the loss of one...

Military would be better to focus on coastline: Layton

Well....       Jack is the leader of a party so far down in the food chain he's gotta play to the lunatic fringe in his party.  Combine that with a feckless media who don't much challenge him on the actual accuracy/truthfullness and things are what they are.  I'd love to hear a reporter begin...

NDP calls for immediate withdrawal from Afghanistan

Can't be a good sign when the leader of the NDP has so little knowledge of party history!  If he did he'd know that the "the NDP support our soldiers" routine is making him look like the town idiot.  No doubt some intrepid reporter in the MSM will point out that his claims are "historically...
