I think the dude has a seriously inflated view of things.  The reality is that the rest of the world isn't going to roll over because some "Al Qaeda spokesman" issues a few threats.  It appears AQ are increasingly being left behind as the world moves on; so now we're seeing the "look at me!!"...

I'd imagine there's a large amount of politics involved.  If the U.S. concentrates only on the Mexican border there'll be howls of outrage from the Mexican-American community and cries of "racism/dicrimination", etc.  If there's effort put into toughening up both the North and South borders...

I' m inclined to think those who listen to, and email, Cross Country Checkup, arguably one of CBC's better efforts,  are a pretty homogenous group.  Consider the number who explain it all by saying we're only there because the U.S. wants us there.  Do they realize that various of our NATO allies...

That may well be the case, however when does asking "open-ended"," very basic questions" cross into the trivial/meaningless ???  What conclusions should we actually take from this?

The NDP seem dead keen on sending our "peacekeepers" into Darfur and/or south Lebanon.  Apparently these aren't inherently "dangerous"?  Sorry, the reality is that the NDP have a miserable history of supporting the Canadian military and their sudden concern for our soldiers reeks of hypocrisy.
