Is the SECDEF incompetent?...MGen Eaton would suggest so

Ever since the legs were cut out from under Shinseki the issue of the SecDef influence has been an issue. Great article from a recently retired 2 star that suggests that the current transition issues in Iraq do not lie at the feet of the soldiers currently engaged. New York Times March 19...

What are you listening to/fav type of music

Just came back from seeing Against Me!  at the Opera House in Toronto.  I have probably seen a couple hundred shows and this one was definitely in my top ten! Amazing band, excellent studio albums and twice as good live.  Incredible energy.

What are you listening to/fav type of music

Bauhaus.  Just got back from their concert at the Koolhaus tonight.  An excellent show, even better than their live "Press the eject and give me the tape" album.

    Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR)

As I stated on another thread: In view of the latest on this "transformational" piece, in my humble opinion this is the best thing our CF could be doing at this point. Congratulations to all involved. The army will survive this and be stronger for it in the long term.  Certainly the infantry...

    Cremated Taliban as Psy-Op Tool?

And I would say it was a stupid Psyops job.... I hope the average civilian reading this site doesn't think that the CF would condone taunting locals while burning bodies as an acceptable Psyops practice.  Despite the approval of the moderator.  I certainly wouldn't allow my troops to engage in...

    Cremated Taliban as Psy-Op Tool?

I would think that this could be construed as an LOAC violation, however the excuse of hygiene is a reasonable excuse.  Probably could have moved them and covered them up with rocks though. The psyops angle and the taunting is just plain stupid.  What do they not understand about the winning on...

    522 Manpack

Great, and good on you.  An exercise is the best time to prove your manliness and carry the manpack.  If you do it for real, and troops lives might depend on your mental ability vice your physical ability, I would highly recommend that you enlist the services of the highly trained (and...

    Afghan Medals Process (merged)

Oh, undoubtedly they must deserve it.  ???  A really rough tour of duty no doubt. Pathetic!  It is really all about the medals... isn't it?

    Afghan Medals Process (merged)

Bottom line is... if the government says that you cannot wear the medal...guess what?..... You can't wear it.   Anything other than the authorized Canadian medals, must be approved by the GG and published in the Canada Gazette...ie Gazzette'd.

is height and fat and muscel a bad thing in the infantry

At times, fat will keep you alive.    I failed to feed my troops for 12 hours in the most inhospitable terrain known to man.   At 8,000 ft you cannot ingest enough calories to keep your weight up even given rations.   Any time I went on Ops I would lose 10 - 15 lbs. Paracowboy, fat isn't...

is height and fat and muscel a bad thing in the infantry

NavComm.... Don't get too excited.  The general CF and Army standard are so far removed from reality as to be completely useless. In the Infantry, we train so far above the requirement of the 13 km march as to make it almost completely irrelevant.  It is a very poor standard. After I conducted...

is height and fat and muscel a bad thing in the infantry

I would say Paracowboy, that you can't always judge the book by the cover.  I have always aimed to train troops to be aerobically fit, and have always trained for weight load training well above the requirements for the BFT. I took troops from Winnipeg at 400 ft above sea level, and 4 days...

is height and fat and muscel a bad thing in the infantry

And I've seen some lads, described as fat, do quite well at 9500 ft and wearing 100 lbs.  I will admit that they were aerobically fit, because they used to run with me on a 10km run.  Not the fastest lads in the company, but hard soldiers.

    Jarhead

I've read it.  I would suggest that you sign it out from the local library as opposed to spending your hard earned money on this book.  It is written in what likely passes as a very "artistic" style.  That being said, it is an intersting and easy read.  Swoffard strikes me as a bit of a bag...

"The stuff the army issues is useless" and "no non-issue kit over seas!"

Well, different strokes for different folks. Canadian soldiers will look like Canadian soldiers regardless whether I let them (and have) wear civvy hiking boots or chest rigs, etc.  We also do our level best to keep track of the location of troops under our command.  I never had any problems...

    Op Anaconda

I hope you got some good training out of it?  I sure did.  At my level I learned a lot about operations in a combined environment and especially C2 with the US and their assets. Ah yes Bronze Stars (they skipped the working rank, the Coy 2IC)....I like to think they should be divided into...

Anyone have anything to say about the Danner Desert Boot

Nope.... I accept that I will slip below -10  celcius... it keeps me sharp. I love the boot... Kev... I mean love.....  Big wide sole, super stability, rugged, tough leather, smooth liner for cloth (certainly better than my Danners). Perhaps i have toes like an ape.... however Danner toe caps...
