    Compuer Science Degree

I‘ve got a comp sci degree from UofT but I‘m in the artillery. Basically I work 9 to 5, Mon - Fri in front of a computer (as a Snr Programmer Analyst), why would I want to do that in the army? I would rather do something different and exciting. Just my 2 cents.

Forget the Bads, How About The Goods?

you mean we have a doctrine?? :D But I agree, our ability to adapt, improvise and overcome is probably one of our greatest assets.

    Extra Kit

Agreed, Ziploc bags are a must in the field. The fleece sleeping bag liner is an aweseom piece of kit. Thing kept me toasty during a winter ex and is great as a standalone sleeping bag for the summer. Camelbacks are great too. Try to get either all black, olive or if you can really afford...

    Extra Kit

Would you happen to know the make/model? My local MEC only seems to carry white LED flashlights and the website doesn‘t seem to say much.

you can get good hunting knives for a heck of a lot cheaper than a k-bar. I believe I paid about $40 for mine. Looks, weighs and feels like a k-bar, but has a stainless steel blade. Only downside is that it doesn‘t have a rubber handle. I bring my gordini gloves with me on winter ex. Only...

U.S. Military Deserters in Canada Megathread

This part was interesting: I‘m curious what kind of claims these 268 so-called refugees filed. But yes, from what I‘ve read he sounds like a free-loader. Hand him over to the US authorities I say.

    No food for five days?

Even if they were to find a way to keeping me fighting without food for five days my morale would drop to next to none. I find being able to sit and eat a meal is a big morale booster. http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,62297,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_3 and a description of the program...

    Traitor in the National Guard?

I think it has. It was in a few papers IIRC. I read one story in the National Post and another I believe it was the Globe and Mail.

Craziest stunts ever pulled on new guys

Hey that‘s our trick also. Except we try to not waste beer and pour pitchers of water instead :) Also for new officers they have to hang upside down from a suspended wagon wheel in the officer‘s mess and drink a beer. NOT FUN after having just eaten dinner I‘ll tell you that!

    PE

MacAulay: I got called 3 wks after I handed in my application. At any rate, don‘t take offense so easily. Try to read the message and not the words. Basically, we‘re all saying that you have to shoot above and beyond the min requirements. I knew people who were able to easily pull off 30...

    Tech can‘t replace soldier skills

Can‘t agree with this more. No matter how great the new kit and weapons are, it can‘t replace your individual soldier skills. Every person in a leadership position should hand this article down to their troops...

if your mindset is to be able to do only 19 pushups you‘re going to be a whole world of hurt the first day of PT (believe me when I say you‘ll be doing alot more than 19. One morning I counted that we did 160 pushups). Listen to those who are actually in the service. We are the ones who have...

    Number Of Knifes Allowed

An Lt with captain‘s bars nonetheless. Anyway I carry a combat knife attached to my webbing. I find it easier to unsheath than the gerber (for when I need a knife) and I‘d use it in preference over the bayonet (mainly because I don‘t have to clean the **** thing and turn it in at the end of an...

    Offr-NCO-NCM Relationships

I was definately taught different on my basic course. My platoon commander told us: "you always have to refer to the other ranks by their rank and last name, they deserve it. Just like you deserve to be called sir" And the CSM of that course also went on later and talked with us about...

Yes but who would the senior NCOs blame when things go wrong :D Basically, an officer is the policy maker and the NCOs implement the policy.

    Offr-NCO-NCM Relationships

Going back to what Che said. You can be friends with an officer, and officers can be friends with the troops but it has to stop there. Part of it has to do with respect and discipline from the troops (which in most cases isn‘t an issue if both sides are professional enough). The officer must...

    Offr-NCO-NCM Relationships

Agreed, and during their leadership training they have the same "maintain your distance" lecture drilled into them as it was into me. It becomes more important the further up the chain you go. This of course, doesn‘t mean you can‘t be personable, just have to know where to draw the line.
