A lot of what Bedard says makes a lot of sense. Especially when he compares the ship stats side by side. The Israeli vessel that is included has capabilities just about on par with our CPFs (plus a bit more speed, and probably lacking a hangar), but with only a fraction of the crew required, and...
I was just looking through ancient posts, and I found this one. It's kinda neat looking back at discussions like this. I find it kind of strange that nobody started it up again in the days after 9/11.
One question from the original post that hasn't been answered is whether the subs would be used overseas. I've been wondering about this as well.
Anyone?
Sailors would be used to run or "man" the ships, Marines would be the soldiers who go ashore from the ships and do army-ish stuff. It would make more sense to get infantry people to be marines, because all you have to do is teach them how to not barf when the sea gets rough. My making sailors...
I'll jump in here.
There was one main difference that I saw. For Afghanistan, the day after 9/11, NATO invoked Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack against one is an attack against all. In that case, there was a clear reason, a clear enemy, widespread agreement on the...
Although I'm not owned at the moment, I may still be able to contribute. I think that it depends on the individual far more than whether you're in the army. You'll have jerks both in the army and in civi life that don't know how to treat others, and those people will never have a good strong...
Back on the topic of us laughing at bone-ups that occur through language differences, consider this example:
http://www.missilethreat.com/missiles/no-dong-2_north_korea.html
.......No....Dong missile, eh? ;D
maybe thats why "nobody takes [him] seriousry" (alluding to Kim Jong Il singing about...
"20 hour days?" ---once in a while
"No contact with civilian world"? ---untrue
"work, work, and no fun"? ---There's a lot of work, but its often up to you whether its fun or not.
"Never see family"? --- I wouldn't say NEVER...
"Eat and breathe military" ---is that a bad thing?
So much depends...
Cousin is in the army reserves
Brother is in the (ch)air force
Dad was a reservist in the early 70s
Two great uncles in the RCN in WWII
one great-great-grandfather was a Lt. in the Russian White Army...fled after the revolution
one Great-great uncle was at Ypres
OK, it is not dance music, it is not lullaby music, it is the music from Just for Laughs Gags...it quite sucks. Don't give credit (by calling it dance or lullaby) when credit isn't due. :threat:
I think that the four year program at the CCG college would be pretty thorough, producing quite good coast guard officers. I don't think that this would be equivalent to naval officership. You asked if the military is classified as a public service, but I think the important question is whether...
Sailing Instructor is not totally off base with his "off duty reservist = civilian" comment
What I'm sure he was referring to was not of a reservists competency or professionalism, but rather his or her legal status. When off duty, reservists aren't subject to the NDA, and I'm under the...
The right not to face torture is too much?
"Torture is banned under international law and there are no exceptions, even in times of war or national emergency."
I think the practice of these "renditions" is pretty disgusting, and undermines the credibility that democracy and rule of law...
There's a nunnery about 2 minutes away from where I live, but I understand that there are only three nuns left, and when they die off, they're going to be putting in a housing development...which may include a future house...of...ya know...ill repute.
Although its just semantics, but I'm quite sure that the Hibernia platform isn't floating, but rather resting comfortably on a big concrete column.
Furthermore, Williams may not have been who started it (I'll trust your word on that one), but he does seem quite passionate about it. If he's...
