    Question about CFB Vernon BC

This is news to me.  Are they conducting these courses over on the "cadet side?"  I did my Reserve GMT/BTT Inf there in '91 and recall that they shut down ARTS Vernon sometime around '93.  A quick Google Street view of the old camp shows that most of the buildings and H-huts are no longer there.

UK workers waste a year of their lives in useless meetings

I've found that meetings come in threes: 1.  The pre-meeting meeting to discuss what you're going to talk about in the meeting and ensure that everyone in your group is on the same page. 2.  The actual meeting. 3.  The post-meeting meeting to discuss how the meeting failed to meet objectives...

    Is Hockey Too Rough ?

As a former player, snowing a goaltender when you have a 7-2 lead is asking for trouble.  I'm surprised he got off the ice with only the injuries he sustained.  Very poor sportsmanship under any circumstance, but made worse when you're up by 5 goals. As a former official, a linesman shouldn't...

The Merged Thread on Gay/ Homosexual Topics and the CF.

However the Pride flag has nothing to do with ethnic minorities - IMHO, it's a social flag for a community that transcends racial boundaries.  As someone that entered the CF at the age of 17, carrying some rather negative stereotypes about the LGBT community - I am proud to say that service...

    Media Bias [Merged]

The one thing I can say in support of the CBC?  At least they've maintained their web presence as a free service.  I'm sure that everyone knows that the Globe & Mail went behind a paywall last year, and seemingly on May 1st, the National Post set up a paywall for "foreign" readers...5 free...

    Running after 40s

If you're finding that running isn't working for you, you might try a treadmill with an aggressive hill climbing profile.  I've found that 30+ minutes at 4.0 mph and a random profile between 5% and 12% give me a good workout without my kneecaps trying to detonate like a claymore.  ;D

Fitness for Operational Requirements of CAF Employment ( FORCE )

Thanks for the video link.  Am I correct in assuming that a lot of the extra tests were trialed but didn't make the final cut?  The "picking" video looks like an accident waiting to happen - you can see from the gouges in the tape that a few have almost missed the striking surface. I'm looking...

    Canadians Unaware of our Navy

Rest assured that this is an internation problem.  I have an American coworker that witnessed a member of their Coast Guard being asked to leave a NOFORN briefing because the speaker thought he was in the Canadian Navy.  ;D  And no, the request did not go over well.

Fitness for Operational Requirements of CAF Employment ( FORCE )

I've seen a few comments regarding the use of operational boots while performing the new test. However, I'll go out on a limb and assume that for a lot of personnel out there, the testing is still going to be performed in the local base gym.  Considering that the PSPs lose their nut when you...

    The Bio-Science Officer Merged Thread

MedCorps covered it - it comes down to biology being a building block - most of the trade positions use human physiology in some form or another.  For example, within IH you have the toxicology of exposures (ie. heavy metals), concentrations of airborne contaminants (mg/m3 or ppm), physiological...

    Getting married during training

I ended up in a similar situation - our solution was to set Boxing Day as the big day.  In all likelihood, any course is going to give you block leave around the end of December.  Christmas is also a big day, but much more difficult to schedule a wedding around. But the most important fact of...

    Voice of Elmo Resigns

You say that, but I suspect you received a certain amount of pride from accomplishing your task in the face of such adversity.  And if you had to deliver a well-placed elbow to the solar plexus of a soccer mom in the process, then all the better... ...sorry, warming up for Black Friday.  ;D   ...

War Museum vandals sought by Ottawa police

A link to the Ottawa Police site...includes an addition picture of one of the two getaway vehicles.  Not sure if the camera shoots video or timed photos, but hopefully they were able to pull the plate when the vehicle arrived/departed.  Also, here's hoping that a set of rims need to be sold to...

    The Bio-Science Officer Merged Thread

Hard to say - while CF need plays a role, you obviously can't fill certain positions unless you have the right background.  As a junior Bio (as in "Pre-PG"), you could very well find yourself involved in some sort of job you were not expecting.  For example, I started off doing aerospace...

Toronto military neighbourhood built in 1953 to be dismantled this fall

It's a true shame what they're planning to do, but the writing was on the wall for a long time.  I was living in the Q patch from 05 to 07 and attended a town hall where a map was flashed up on the screen - showing the entire patch as a "desert grotto" for the Downsview Park expansion.  That was...

    New ballistic eyewear

I'm not one of the Human Factors types within the trade (I do Industiral Hygiene), so I'm limited to my own personal experiences providing assistance on some of the projects when I was at DRDC-T. A lot of the concerns are due to the thermal capabilities of the item....foam gaskets around the...
