Isn't the knock against the EADS CASA C-295 that it would require more bases in the North in order to meet minimum response times? Oh wait, sorry ... wrong thread.  ;)

    Antonov or AN-225

???? The "AN" in "AN-225" means "Antonov" (the manufacturer).  Although not a jet, the Spruce Goose was even bigger!

    Global Warming/Climate Change Super Thread

Interesting observation (no pun intended) on the subject of storm counts: http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=2474 On the link there's much more, including graphs showing the official vs. adjusted (without the storms that had no associated ship or shore report) number of storms over time.

    Global Warming/Climate Change Super Thread

Isn't Tim Ball the guy that figures that increased CO2 and warming are correlated, but that CO2 concentration lags temp changec?

That article is 4 1/2 years old: #100 has already been delivered ... unit cost is $97MM, per the globalsecurity link below.

    F-22 or F-35

There has been some discussion of the Japanese acquiring a (less capable) export version ... but as I think you are suggesting, it has more to do with politics than anything else. http://www.military.com/features/0,15240,88282,00.html IMHO, the only chance you'll see a CF pilot in an F22 is on...

    F-22 or F-35

That is rather misleading as it rolls all of the fixed R&D cost into the reduced order (which is starting to look like it will be increased with the grounding of the F15s): unit cost is more like <$100MM.

Analyst: Disband the US Air Force??????

The problem with guys like these is that they take air supremacy/superiority for granted (and I don't think it's presumptuous to guess that the vast majority of the Army's planning is predicated on same). Bringing-up the subject of strategic bombing in Vietnam without mentioning Linebacker II...

    Pay FY 07/08

Actually it is worse than that: it would have to be retroactive with interest in order to break even: effectively, we are getting back some of our pay decrease due to inflation. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the PLD "pot" gets/has been increased, or is this just a redistribution of...

Fill your boots: http://www.toronto.drdc-rddc.gc.ca/medical/visreq_e.html All there, except not yet updated to the new criteria: the new initial Pilot standard is V2 (i.e., same as SAR Tech, CCEP. Helicop & former Pilots in that link).

    Canada's New (Conservative) Foreign Policy

100% with Recce & Jammer: the "if enough Europeans can be bribed or coerced into agreement, it is morally right" attitude reflects FAR worse on them than it does on us (if I gave a rat's ass what European politicos have to say about us).
