    Why would you leave?

Barring any career-ending moves (getting caught in bed with the general‘s daughter, or the general, for that matter), is the choice to leave the CF usually a personal one? If you want to stay in and your contract is coming to an end, are you pretty much guaranteed a job, or is it different every...

    Kit parade questions

So I happen to check the CFLRS website and the officer cadet joining instructions have been updated (compared to the ones my CFRC sent me). So no lounging around in my housecoat but now I have to bring hangers... Anyway, how strict is the first kit parade going to be in terms of quantity, of...

    Artillery Officer Merged Thread

Gotcha. One question: at the point at which an officer goes into Field, AD or Locating, whose choice is it between the three streams? Is it completely his, completely the unit‘s, or a combination based on his aptitude/spaces that need to be filled? (And if so, what separates a good Field officer...

Just what I was looking for. Thanks, guys. Cheers, Ralph.

    Artillery Officer Merged Thread

Possible roles for a new artillery officer are split up into three - I know the difference between field and air defence, but what’s target acquisition – is that like a FOO, and only for field artillery, or something different? Also, does anyone have any idea how one ends up in the three? Do...

How does leave work on course?

Thanks, y‘all. To br - yup, I‘m on Serial 0309 (I think that‘s the number). Cheers, Ralph.

How does leave work on course?

I‘ll be on BOTC and SLT from mid-Sep. until they give up on me learning French (late next summer) and then Phases II-IV. Obviously I won‘t get leave on basic, but what about French? How does it work if you‘re on course for the entire year - and would I get 20 days for the 1/3 year I‘ll be in...

    I‘m back... and WTF??!?!?!?!?

It‘s a lot tougher (with a lot less glory) to be a responsible husband/father than an officer. Their need won‘t go down between now and the January course - and the board sits in the fall, so you won‘t have that long to wait. Hopefully you can be put at the top of the waiting list for next time...

How long does an offer take?

I‘ll take your advice - they‘ll learn to hate the sound of my voice ;) Incidentally, what is the starting date for the September BOTP? Thanks, Ralph.

How long does an offer take?

So I got a phone call over a month ago from the CFRC saying I had made the list for the next officer basic course. Does it usually take this long to get the actual offer? My file manager said they haven‘t received any offers for anybody yet, so I‘m not too worried, but I‘d really like to give...

    I‘m back... and WTF??!?!?!?!?

Oh man – when it rains, it pours… From an unemotional standpoint, you’re the one who’s definitely going to be working until retirement age. Do you guys have kids already? While I’d be happy to be a Mr. Mom myself, it isn’t my first choice (and going back to work and leaving babies...

    Failing courses

How exactly do you fail a course? For those of you who have passed (or failed) courses where, like, 14 of 31 guys made it, what happened to the other 17 (besides medical problems)? Is it set up so that any written exams are what count, or is it “the last guy back from the recce goes home”...

    Mortars: 51 mm, 60 mm, 81 mm, 120 mm & more

Sorry for the new flame-like subject title, but nobody answered my original (lame) query: How has the takeover of the mortars affected artillery so far? Are the recruits learning mortar drill during their MOC course, or are all the tubes sitting in a back room somewhere? Are batteries being...

    Officer Selection Board

Re: Noid‘s question - 32. The recruiter seemed fairly disinterested (I brought it up) and remarked that the main thing is that you don‘t join so late you can‘t get your 20 years in. I can‘t imagine they‘d ever hire a 45-year-old to be an infantry officer, but who knows? Cheers, Ralph.

    Officer Selection Board

I think combat arms and engineering are two different lists (the recruiter said they had gotten the first one in, as opposed to everything) so I‘m sure it‘s still on the way...I know how you feel, though... Cheers, Ralph.

    Officer Selection Board

Whew. One year and one day from when I dropped off my application, I‘m in. Now, artillery - that‘s the one with the guns that go boom, right? ;) Thank god arty got the mortars so I can at least see what the front line looks like without binoculars. Good luck to everyone still waiting. See you...

Called yesterday - they haven‘t gotten any offers for any officer trades yet here in Calgary. Cheers, Ralph.

    Basic Training Question

On my reserve basic in ‘89, I forgot my #@%*($& headdress (something my section commander realized as we were marching to mess) and got 100 pushups in return. He started them with me and dropped out at around 70, so the Lt. had to finish them off. The Mcpl‘s mistake was forgetting that he...

    Signing Bonus - Engineering Officers

Not (if I get in) that I‘m expecting to want to leave before retirement, but what does this nine-year contract thing for officers - and if you don‘t want to stay nine years - entail? On one of the other threads, it was mentioned that the guys who get signing bonuses have to pay them back if they...
