500,000 in Canada to do what? There is no realistic scenario where we will need half a million people in uniform to defend Canadian soil. Defence of Canada needs lots of high tech kit and highly trained specialists to operate it. It doesn't need 400, 000 Pte Riflemen.

Even those Canadian's who's families had moved a generation or two earlier than that still felt like part of the Empire. These days we would be unlikely to find a million Canadians willing to put on the uniform to go fight in Europe or Asia.

That's not going to happen. No American government is going to send their political rivals to an international court to face justice for fear it would happen to them after their term.
