    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

No, the CAF is always in crisis mode because it has been chronically underfunded for decades. You can't make-up for that shortfall in a year, and you can't make-up for the total shortfalls by purchasing kit that is unlikely to ever be used, before you buy kit that is needed now. The RCN...

    Canada's tanks

The problem with that would be the CAF would be indistinguishable from the UA to both friends and foes. Essentially, the CAF would be an auxiliary to the US Military. We go that route, and all defence industries in Canada would dry up, because America is going to protect American jobs first. It...

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

Gathering Int, sure. I'm guessing they did it with far more sophistication than the random guy popping in and asking what everybody is doing with their prohibs, seeing the vitriol sent their way, then peacing out. Chances are, if the RCMP or others are on CGN, they are the under the radar guys...

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

CGN is an absolute cesspit of conspiracy thinking, and wackjob views of pretty much everything. I poked into the OIC ban sub-forum, and regret wasting my time there. There are users there convinced the government is sending in plants to ask questions about the buy-back, to encourage others...

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

Sometimes the CAF has earned every ounce of cynicism that is directed at it. In this case, I said it because the people I work with say it all the time... I'm well aware that it isn't the primary reason the F-35 was chosen, but it was definitely part of the reason. Also, sometimes "leading...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

I know what he means, and that doesn't change the reality that buying a bunch of systems to store "just in case" is a far lower priority than buying systems for use right now. The CA, the people most likely to actually needs CUAS systems, have none. There is a zero percent chance the RCN will...

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

The cynic in me says because the USAF has F-35s, and the RCAF always first asks "how can we be more like the USAF?" But thats just my experience working with people indoctrinated into the RCAF.

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Again, there are other priorities for the money. The CA completely lacks GBAD, how likely do you think it is that the RCN will get GBAD/CUAS systems for warehouses before the CA gets those systems for the troops in Latvia? Once the CA has systems and figures out what works, it makes sense...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

That goes back the core problem with police and the military. The potential for an unpredicted attack is omni-present. Police don't patrol in APCs, despite attacks on police happening far more frequently than random attacks on warships/naval vessels. There was/is little reason to put...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

It's not just potential, it's probability. The probability of an attack is low, so AOPVs can go to those places. Even a combatant ship can be taken out by an attack out of nowhere, because you don't sail closed-up at action stations at all times.

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

I'm pretty sure the registry had lower punishments for non-compliance than posession of a prohibited device does. Also, I suspect the government will be looking to make examples of people. People are free to make their own choices, but people should be making the decision with a realistic...

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

I suspect the next time the CPC forms government, will be after the deadline, and they won't bother with trying to reverse the prohibitions. Maybe handguns, if they haven't been confiscated by then... While there are a lot of firearms owners in Canada, there aren't enough in the right ridings...

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

Anyone holding onto a former NR prohib after 30 Oct is playing a dangerous game with pretty much zero pay-off.

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

I think his meaning was far less complex that interoperability. If Canada doesn't buy enough fighters, the USAF will conduct more intercepts over Canada, because we won't have enough jets available. As for interoperability, @Good2Golf already mentioned the Rafale integrated with the USN...

    Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

I suspect you're correct. So long as they can move legislation through parliament, I doubt they want to risk an election. It's better for them to wait for some of their policies to bear fruit, rather than to hope that a bump from a great speech will carry them through.

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

That would kill sales to other countries, as they would start questioning if they were next. LM will likely try to sweeten the pot, not threaten us, to get us to buy more.

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Mounting the gun is not the problem. Adding the fie control radar, and the magazines for the ammunition is a problem. We could waste time and effort trying to make AOPVs into shitty CPFs, or we could accept reality, and design/build the CDC instead. There is essentially nothing a 25mm...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

In the time it would take to convert an AOPV, we could likely build a new OSV with the magazine and other features baked in. Kind of like how the corvettes came about. Switching to the new RWS used on the RCD? Reasonable. Converting the ship to use a 57mm mount? Ridiculous.

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

There is another option... We can live in reality and accept that the AOPV is not a warship. Then we can not pretend that slapping an expensive weapons system on a ship not designed to fight is a good idea.
