I want to hear about where your interest for the military comes from!

Yes, he was, but it still meant that my grandfather at 17 had to read the telegram about his going missing to his mother. He cited that telegram as the reason he eventually became a pacifist (and the reason why he went to enlist). The funny thing is, essentially the only reason why he got...

Toronto: Love it or hate it?

Oh yes, my grandfather spent time in New York that summer, and his descriptions of the city at the time is what fueled my interest in criminology.

I want to hear about where your interest for the military comes from!

For another 55 years or so. He went MIA because he was injured, transferred to a hospital, and it took three months for the paperwork to catch up.

Toronto: Love it or hate it?

I was just about to go into college when it occurred, spending the day helping my mother with a field-trip with her preschool. Amusingly, I remember that day less for the beginning of the blackout, and more because my mother injured her hand on a water slide. But I remember how it played out...

I want to hear about where your interest for the military comes from!

To be honest, I'd forgotten that I even *had* the interest for twenty years or so. While I can truthfully say that my interest came from a visit to the Warplane museum in Hamilton when I was a child, combined with some of the stories of my paternal grandfather (as his brother was a tail gunner...

CAF Cannabis Use 2018- DAOD 9004-1

Well, I've got absolutely no intention of ever touching Cannabis due to the fact that it does not have the typical effect on my physiology, so whatever happens, I'm going to be completely clean in perpetuity.

The Arctic - Resource Exploitation, Development and Population

Fair enough. I've only been in one a long, long time ago.

The Arctic - Resource Exploitation, Development and Population

That's just an engineering problem no one's bothered to solve yet.  ;D

Am I too old, unfit or uncertain?

Thinking about it, I'm 34 now, would be 35 by the time BMOQ comes around. I'd most likely be a decade or so older than the average, but since I've had experience with that in my last college program (returning to pick up new skills, when most classmates were just out of high school), the only...

The Arctic - Resource Exploitation, Development and Population

You know, it occurs to me that airships and other rigid lighter-than-air craft would be quite useful in the Arctic, presuming certain modifications to deal with the climate. Would make spotting submarines and other foreign craft crossing through the archipelago much easier, as well.

    Toronto's Statistical Crime Rate

If I'm not mistaken, the street car system passes that are at its south end - I love the view from Queen street.

    Toronto's Statistical Crime Rate

Pulling on my Anthropology hat for a bit, I actually come down firmly on the side of saying that Toronto is inherently dangerous. Thing is, something doesn't have to be violent in order to be dangerous. I could, over time, lay out a generally convincing case that there are a number of factors...

    US vs Canada

While Canada doesn't have a federal Ministry of Education (as I think it should), it occurs to me that a provincial Minister of Education that has served in the military opens up a number of promising options...

    Outdoor Gear Thread

I picked up a nice Coleman Lensatic Compass, in case I'm sufficiently far into the woods that even knowing the direction of North is unlikely to prove a benefit. Since in combination of marking trees, I'd be able to use it to properly orient my way back out, it's worthwhile to keep as a backup.

    Old photos

Going through my grandfather's estate, we found a collection of photos from WWI and WWII, each containing a family member (as per notes). Unfortunately as there are multiple people in each photo, it's rather difficult to be sure which individual is our family member. We're relatively certain...

Enhanced Reliability Check (ERC) - Merged

I feel a bit silly for asking, but considering it caused a three hour delay crossing the border into the US on at least one occasion, it seemed appropriate. Back when he was 8 years old, my grandfather attended a summer camp at the invitation of a friend. Nearly fifty years later, a border...

Saudi Arabia expels Canadian ambassador for urging release of activists

Since Saudi Arabia is not a signatory on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, it seems to me that as far as they are concerned, they're not doing anything wrong. As even North Korea is party to that agreement, I think it's fair to say that there's a certain delusional...

    Editorial Opinion

It's interesting that the best source of news I have is people who are currently enrolled in a journalism program - they have yet to be infected with some of the various ideological plagues going around...

You know you are military when...

As happened in my family: You consider a box of grenades an appropriate gift for a baby shower. (Obviously, this was a joke).

What book are you reading now?

His writing style does take some getting used to, but I think having very short chapters is a decent factor in the number of copies he's sold. Makes it easier for people who don't have the time to sit and read.
