@NavyShooter @Halifax Tar For those of us with experience in this, I think this is where we stop talking about ships' load-outs and capabilities.

No no. What I'm saying is that the delivery platform (in this case, a P8) is at less potential risk from the Dera than the submarine is. While its clear that the Dera was not in any way aware of the submarine's presence, it at least had the capability of engaging the submarine with it's own...

Hey don't lump me in with the nancies who are to shy to engage in combat. My motto as an ORO was "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!".

Agreed. If a submarine is firing, it's only real option is total destruction of the target (except maybe against something really big). Hence, my arguing that an ASM would have been a better choice.

Ok, if I were the CO, and there was literally zero chance of us having any impact in helping save Canada, I would chose not to put to sea. I'd look at perhaps relocating to NZ our Australia, but first I'd look at whether or not there was an US assets between Fiji and Aus/NZ. Bitter, much? What...

How do you deliberately target any area of a ship with a Mk48 torpedo? All the Torpedo (or the operator, if being wire guided) sees is an acoustic bearing line.

My apologies, I must have missed your concession somewhere up thread. This threat is growing fast and it's hard to keep up. Not in Naval warfare you don't. The aim (typically, but not always) is to mission kill enemy platforms, not outright sink them, and the killing of actual sailors in that...

Imagine an HMCS Regina is alongside Suva, Fiji on its way to participate in Op HORIZON. While she is there, the US attacked Canada. Within 2 days we've been decimated. Entire Air force destroyed while still in its hangars/on the tarmac. Ships blown apart while alongside. Key C2 control nodes...

I wasn't opining as to whether the Americans would need or want our help, rather it was a retort to the implication that nothing Canada has could be of value to the Americans in this contest.

I’m rather surprised and disappointed that you’d frame sympathy for dead sailors as hand-wringing and sanctimony. One of the few constants of naval warfare has been the professional respect sailors show for those who share the same risks at sea, even when they’re fighting each other. Besides...

Their leadership has been decimated. Critical C2 nodes have been obliterated. Their ability to coordinate is gone. The launches that we're still seeing are likely based off of standing orders, or like you pointed out, local initiative.
