Tac Vest does not make the grade.

Plate carriers and armor with pouches attached are fine if your doing DA's out of Hummer's, but don't work for the myriad of jobs and tasks that the average combat arms soldier will be asked to do throughout the full spectrum of operations. Artillerymen don't want to carry their mags while...

Tac Vest does not make the grade.

There is a Load Carriage Jury commencing next week.  It's goal is to find a replacement for the TAC vest.  The basis is "show and tell."  Each reg force Bn is sending 2 soldiers with recent operational experience.  In addition there will be 8 reps from other combat arms trades as well as some...

Questions about CF vehicles - design and operation

Although it looks from your pictures like only two bolts hold the pulley to the chassis, in reality all four tap pads are used to bolt it down.  I checked today for you. The view from the driver's hatch is limited, yes, but the limitation is relative.  Can he see less than if he were hatches...

Questions about CF vehicles - design and operation

You can't do that with a LAV III.  The suspension is too weak up front. That's ... interesting?  Seems like it would take an awful lot of effort to get it up there, and be quite dangerous to get down.  I've never seen that done, and personally don't advise anyone to do so for the reasons...

Questions about CF vehicles - design and operation

Good - Ramp comes down quicker.  Bad - Can't use the door, therefore air pressure must be maintained in order to drop the ramp without going manual.  A loss of engine power still allows you to drop ramp as long as there is enough air in the secondary tank, the loss of that air forces you to use...

Questions about CF vehicles - design and operation

And how!!  Did this on Op MEDUSA, didn't realize it at the time until we returned to the "friendly" side of the river.  Figured it was a one-in-a-million type of shot.  The cutter is also lowered when driving using he driver's windshield. As an instructor on LAV driver courses, I have become...

Canadian Combat Action Badge - Now A Dead Idea (Merged Threads)

STOP! STOP! STOP! Check your fire from both sides, lest this quickly spiral down the crapper. Royalnomad, be aware that expressing one's opinion, especially with little substantiation, usually results in hurt e-feelings.  Your opinion is valid, however you should have elaborated on why you...

    New Rucksack

A landfill's worth of UCR's will not change the law.  A conversation with your local MP, however, is closer to the mark.  A conversation with the Minister of Public Works might be even better. I guess they'll have to look for other desks to hold down to avoid the next war.    :) A simple...

    New Rucksack

And therein lies the rub.  The laws concerning government procurements have to change, at least with regards to DND, before the "big" CF sees any sort of large scale COTS procurements.  I don't see this happening anytime soon, too many fingers in the pie of government contracts. What needs to...

Do Canadian soldiers use the PRC 117 radio?

No question.  I'm leaving behind the antiques.  I'd have better luck bringing my cell phone on patrol than the antiques he's talking about. The 117F is superior in all ways and shapes. YOU GET 3 FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!  HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THAT DEAL?!

Do Canadian soldiers use the PRC 117 radio?

Good point. STOP THE PRESSES!  WE NEED TO MAKE A CHANGE TO THE TO&E! Man, if only there was some kind of super radio out there that was roughly the size and weight of a manpack, but could do the job of 3 different radio's ... hmm. Listen, you've just been told by two and a half dudes who have...

Do Canadian soldiers use the PRC 117 radio?

Actually, most everyone in theater is on satellite or at least has the capability.  It's not just for scuba-ninja's anymore. So you want platoon's to carry 522's as well as 138's?  I pity that poor signaler.  If only there was a radio that had better range AND have satellite capability...
