Boeing to shut down C-17 production

Boeing had been trying to interest NATO in a few C-17, if there are whitetails at the end of production Canada should aquire one or two additional aircraft.

AIP Sub Problem - 110 days on patrol - Never detected

IMO the best thing to do with the Vic's is replace them and not waste any more money on them then is absolutely necessary, Chicoutomi should never return to service part her out to service remaining three.

    Naval Icebreakers

IMO the CG should operate these vessels, so what if they have a gun, train CG personnel to use it. Defence budget does not need the strin of funding icebreakers which could be used in Gulf of St. Lawrence and as OPV's on east coast during Arctic winter. Icebreakers should be designed to embark...

    Oshkosh

Defence minister O'Connor was formerly a lobbyist for Stewart & Stevenson, hopeful his former lobbying activities will not affect his office in getting the best kit available for CAF. Any new truck should have the option of carring armour which of course reduces cargo capacity, this is one of...

Canada considers purchase of used US Army Chinooks

I believe the RAF has 6 or 8 Chinook's which have been grounded since purchase because of US refusal to provide proper software for cockpick? IIRC US Army looked at procuring these helo's from UK but found them in poor condition. A new version of Ch-53E IE the "K" model is on drawing board for USMC.

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

I'll believe it when I see the ships in the water as for now its all talk, no ships are on order and none are building. From Canada's Navy 1985 " 24 warships would be required to just meet needs assigned by the Navy by the then current government, however acquisition of Leopard MBT's, Aurora's...

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

The trend of all the western navies has been a reduction in the numbers of surface combatants, primarily due to the high cost of replacement vessels, a case in point the RN Type 45 6 vessels to replace the Type 42's. The Halifax class was to have a further 6 vessels.

So what should we name the JSS, the LPD and the Icebreakers?

Icebreaers for the Artic should be Coast Guard ships, funds for these ships should not come from DND.

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

Well if IIRC the 12 Halifax class ships replaced replaced 16 DDE/DDH ships, if we get 12 ships to replace Halifax and last 3 Trump DDH's. As for a timeline I would think Felex will be underway in concert with JSS construction a BHS likely to follow, Tribals will certainly all be gone by 2015...

A ship dose't have to be designated a hospital ship to have substandial medical facilities on board. Dragoon, just a gut feeling, Canada's defence buget too stretched to by more than 12 destroyers JSS BHS new trucks helos cargo aircraft, the list goes on and on, and is the fault of sucesssive...

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

Unless there is a huge increase in defence budget I don't believe there will be funds for more than a dozen new surface combat ships. For maximum versatility I think three versions of a monohull design will be built, ie air defence C&C, ASW general purpose, a Flexdeck version to support troops...

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

For BHS is Canada looking at the Spanish 27000ton LHD from Navantia or the Dutch 30000ton Enforcer LHD from Schelde, IMO Canada needs two such vessels. I suspect the Tribals will be retired without replacement, the frigates will undergo FELEX, a dozen replacements will be built probably somewhat...
