Latest stats: most civvie cas caused by Taliban

I wonder if even the 82-12 ratio underplays the difference in moral character between the two sides. After all, the Taliban faces a uniformed enemy visibly distinct from the civilian populace. Whereas, pro-government forces face an enemy who intentionally tries to blend into local populations.

Lady Kicked Out of Theater for Texting

The whole text message phenomenon creeps me out too. However, I wonder if the reaction of us "old fogies" isn't just the generation gap repeating itself. We dump on the kids for their texting. Our parents dumped on us for our video games. Their parents dumped on them forĀ  television. Our great...

    Media Bias [Merged]

I have a bud who works in local TV. He is required to do a wide range of stories on a large range of issues. Early morning, he might be covering a medical issue. Late morning, a legal proceeding. In the afternoon, a military story. And before he heads home from work, a report on the local...

Defence spending: does the party in power spell the difference?

In a Macleans' article, John Geddes asks: is support for the military dependent on the party in power? Or has historical circumstance been responsible for the funding ups and downs? http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/07/05/defence-spending-does-the-party-in-power-spell-the-difference/

    Respect our values or Leave

I can't say I was impressed by the original interview with this Australian politician. Whether it was integrating the Irish a 100 years ago, or the Muslims today, there have always been serious difficulties when cultures meet and clash. I agree that there are radical Islamists who abuse the...

"Canadians trust military more than government: Poll"

Strangely, I have received similar comments from arts students who are "against" the military. Without exception, these students hadn't given their position any serious thought. So I would use the Socratic method. And quickly they would realize that they weren't against having a military. They...

    Deconstructing "Progressive " thought

The original thread was on left of centre thought. In the last few pages, the discussion has drifted pretty heavily towards religious discussion. I am wondering if it would be smart for me begin a new thread entitled "Debating Religion".

'War on terror' set to surpass cost of Second World War

Trillions of dollars are being spent. I suggest the appropriate question would be, Are the radical elements of Islam as much of a threat to us as the Axis Powers were? If the response is yes, then the costs associated are justified.

Radical group may disrupt Prince William's visit

Generally, the government is left with the security bill. However, in fairness, I understand the same standard applies for large public gatherings of civilians. If you organize a public march or rally to express your political views, the government will provide security without charge.

    Has Harper gone liberal?

Even with Layton there, NDP support is precarious. Quebec voters have no long-standing tradition of voting NDP. The Orange Wave of 2011 was a mile wide, and an inch deep.
