Why is the military so right wing?

The lefties seem to have a disconnect between what they 'know' and what they 'want'.  For example, Lloyd Axeworthy introduced 'The Responsibility to Protect' document, a very principled stand on how we should work to improve the good of other people in the world.  A fine piece of Liberal/NDP...

    Tax relief

"The other reason to support broad based tax relief is the simple fact (proven by direct observation in many times and places) that lowering taxes leads to greater revenues, since more resources are now available for investment, spending and saving. 30 million people choosing their own...

    Shifting the balance of power

Health, education and wealfare are provincial jurisdictions and are paid for by a mix of the provincial portion of taxes collected by the feds (except for Quebec) and municipal or property taxes.  If my parents, wife and family are receiving health care, education (at any level) it's paid by...

    Shifting the balance of power

As former inhabitants of Calgary my wife and I saw the up and down of the Alberta economy drastically.  Although our drive times to work had increased from 15 min to 45 min when we left, we also lost $23,000 on the sale of our house.  Some of our neighbours actually packed up and walked from...

Best anti virus for the money?

Norton AV - should have been more specific.  There are other features to Norton that are good such as the defrag and windows protection features, but sometimes I don't think it's worth the hastle.

Best anti virus for the money?

I'm currently running three computers with three different anti virus programs - Norton/Symantic, Panda/Titanium, and McAffee.  IMHO Norton takes over too much of the system and Panda requires you to disable it before running some internet apps, so it's all or nothing.  This leaves McAffee as...

    Firefighters' fitness test ruled discriminatory

Ah, let the fun begin.  So the Standard IS the Standard. Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

    Firefighters' fitness test ruled discriminatory

Alright, let's start to get rid of these duffers!!! What's the releae item?

    Firefighters' fitness test ruled discriminatory

Once again, standards have been taken to extremes... I suggested 14 pushups vice 15, and 39 wpm vice 40.  A later writer took it to the wall with 1 pushup and 1 wpm.  This is a silly position to take IMHO.  I suggest that this is the precise reason that we have career managers and MOs aroung...

    Firefighters' fitness test ruled discriminatory

The fire department in Calgary had a test about 15 years ago that was ruled 'non bona fide work requirement' (BFR).  It required the members to raise a ladder onto two hooks for storage.  It was found to be difficult for women and shorter men to do and was ruled bogus for several reasons: 1. ...

Kilo_302 Defends The Soviet Empire[ split from] UN is rotten to the core

The Soviet Union in 1945 had suffered one of the greatest and tragic victories ever, on a scale of Rome's battle against Carthage.  In the last 150 years they had been invaded by the US, Britain, France, and Germany.  They had even been humbled by tiny Finland who could muster all of a dozen...

Question about pay level, my offer, and my finacial rights.

Yes, there is, read the pension act.  Done and done.

Question about pay level, my offer, and my finacial rights.

The pension act... it's not driven by the military.  It clearly states a 90 day 1 for 1 requirement.  I just had my pension recalculated as I'll have 30 years Res and Reg in Mar 07.  Believe me, I have a vested interest in this one.

Question about pay level, my offer, and my finacial rights.

Big caveat - class B is not 1 for 1, only if each contract is over 90 days.  89 days counts as class A.  Your time will be counted 4 different ways - for rank, IPC, CD and pensionable time.  Rank and IPC are the perview of the career manager.  Supply and demand.  Good luck.

    The Toronto Star's Universe

I'm pretty open minded, so I read the Op/Ed peices of several newspapers daily, about 12 from all across Canada.  The Star is the only one I do not waste my time on.

Canadians losing knowledge of military history

Yesterday I mentioned to my supervisor (at 1 Cdn Air Div HQ) that in WWII the allies put one model of aircraft into poduction from design in only 30 days. She said "Why would they need to do that?"!! Let alone the vacant stares when I mention Agincourt or Trafalgar.  Let's face it folks, we're...

Some positive news stories in the papers

The Ottawa Sun column is encouraging!  I recall recently being told that soldiers like myself weren't smart enough to understand the 'three block war' so NGOs should be brought in to replace.  Deep breath, self control....

Ottawa hasn't ruled out a guard of honour at war memorial

"A great way to make a little cash...." I take it the guard would consist of four members similiar to the National War Memorial on Remembrance day.  I doubt many reservists will volunteer for the 0200 to 0600 shift.  Has anyone else ever had the privilege of coordinating just 1 reservist for a...

    Battle Honours

The point Echo9 raises about battle honours vis a vis the GG Citation is an excellent one, as I believe the GG has in a sense hijacked our historical system of awards.  The GG citation does have the advantage of recognizing members attached for an operation, be they reservists, support trades or...

HRC Challenge: Medical discharges thinning ranks & forcing unemployment

While I fully understand that there must be standards, the particular regulations must be carefully phrased.  At one time, at least, Commanding Officer's had great latitude in interpreting rules and making recommendations to DCBA/DMILC that addressed a member's unique overall situation, not just...
