    Little Honking Ships......

My understanding is that defence inflation (over and above consumer inflation) is part of the model TB applied to derive the NSPS headline number.

    Little Honking Ships......

Ah. So "a gap appears to be developing" = "kill the whole CF budget". Got it. The AG's recommended solution is that DND should monitor and report back to the minister as things change over time. Good thing all of the projects in the NSPS have full time project staffs to do exactly that. So...

What is your basis for that assessment?

Basic and Reserves help me figure this out?

Yep. The courses teach the same things - the only difference is the delivery of the material and the location. If there's room on a Reg F course (which is the bit that matters) you'll be loaded onto it. You are mistaken. If your transfer request isn't granted, it won't be for that reason.

    Commissionaires

Strong agree. And aside from the low standard of the service provided and the fact that in the cases of most new hires Commissionaires are not retired CAF members: quite frankly unskilled, just-above-minimum-wage security guard jobs are not the careers the government should be steering retired...

Is the Canadian Naval Reserve all but finished?

I agree for the most part, but I think we're kidding ourselves when we say we absolutely can't apply any of the USN's techniques successfully to pare a four-month QL3 down to, say, three months plus a longer OJT package and small DL/DT phase.

Is the Canadian Naval Reserve all but finished?

Subs are different for a lot of reasons: the crews are small relative to the complexity of the systems (as compared to an MCDV of a comparable crew size), so I don't think there's a lot of room to accommodate junior members who aren't fully trade qualified (as compared to on a heavy) even in...

Is the Canadian Naval Reserve all but finished?

You're right - let me caveat my observations to say that I was talking about the operator/non-tech trades, which predominate in NAVRES. Does an NCIOP/NAVCOM/Boatswain/RMS Clk/Cook QL3 really need to be six months long? No, but since the tech trade courses need to be that long, it makes it easier...

Is the Canadian Naval Reserve all but finished?

I don't know who these reservists are - these ones that keep getting mentioned whenever this sort of discussion comes up. They definitely don't look like the majority of people in my unit. At the front end of their careers, reservists are either university students or straight up itinerantly...

    MARSS with History degree

Yes You can apply as a RESO candidate currently attending university (DEO is the entry scheme for officers who already have degrees). Not really a question, but I think what you're asking is does a history degree at Laval get funded under that program? The answer is: generally, yes. What...

Retired general claims $72K in moving expenses (CTV)

A clip on CTV last night showed a list of costs of all general/flag officer moves made within a certain time period, so it appears to have been the fruit of an ATI fishing expedition. Leslie's was by far bigger than the others, which were otherwise within the $20K-40K range (including one from...

Retired general claims $72K in moving expenses (CTV)

Not if you ask for it by name, but if you ask something like, "Please give me the cost of all retirement moves that occurred both from and to the Ottawa area in the month of XXX 2012" you'll end up with a very short list of results. Leslie can claim that he didn't know what the expenses...

Retired general claims $72K in moving expenses (CTV)

How many of those members loudly championed defence administration cost savings in a report they compiled and then leaked prior to retiring to go into politics? Somewhat fewer. I agree that what he did was entirely legal and that he was indeed "entitled to his entitlements". The question of...

Retired general claims $72K in moving expenses (CTV)

I think this is considerably more about sending a nice little "welcome to politics" message to the future Liberal candidate in Ottawa-Orleans. If he thought he was going to run on the strength of his leaked cost-cutting report, he's going to be doing so on a back foot now.

Fantino in/out of VAC: changes in DM/other staff (merged)

Though from the video footage of the "meeting" it's pretty clear he's not the only one in that room that fits your description. For my part, I'm ashamed to have my interests represented by these self-appointed negotiators.

RCN charting a new course in command roles and the reserves

Well said. More recently, a couple of projected NAVRES units that made it to the execution phase of the Naval Presence in Quebec expansion plan were shuttered at some point early on: planned units in Valleyfield and Sherbrooke, if I recall correctly.

RCN charting a new course in command roles and the reserves

Yep - a "key constraint" of the transition plan is that the total number of RCN FTEs located in QC will not change. That's not to say that certain current NAVRES functions might not eventually be moved to Esquimalt or Ottawa and other RCN staff functions moved to QC (not a bad plan, given the...

RCN charting a new course in command roles and the reserves

Don't make the mistake of confusing the new roles for Comd MARPAC and Comd MARLANT with what the fleets on each coast will be doing. This is NOT a return to the days of the Training Squadron. Comd MARPAC and his staff in addition to having responsibility for the CANPAC AOR will also be the...
