"There is an undergraduate college in the US that does not give out grades at all; feedback is qualitative. Students work to learn, not for grades."
Your answer:
That may work for artsy fartsy stuff, but I would never hire an engineer, mathematician, scientist (take your pick)...
Just to clarify, I never commented about the quality of professors and I don't think anyone here said this was about "lousy" profs. I was commenting on a "System" where there are too many students in impersonal classes. I am sure committed profs do not want to teach in that system as committed...
Maybe the students who want to work hard and learn something aren't bothering to go to Universities where: there are 250-750 in a class; where they are taught by grad students, lecturers or video; where they take multiple-choice exams, etc. The undergrad students I know who are in small...
1. Does anyone have a mail address to the troops near KAF that can go through the US mail? I cannot find one on a search.
2. Apparently there is a school in Zhari with no teacher or supplies. Girls can attend, too. I can organize our local children's hospital to donate supplies and ship...
There are many inequities in our health care system as services get cut. Families don't care where the help comes from, they just want it, and desperately so. In BC, physiotherapy was cut from covered services. So if your injury is caused by a MVA and you can sue and get big $$$ you can pay...
This woman's behavior was stupid and dangerous. In this country, however, we have a history of bailing out people who choose to do stupid, dangerous, risky and illegal things and who come to bad ends. Even with warnings and laws, most of our tax dollars go to exactly that. Some people just...
Depending on the nature of the injury, his needs and the fitness level of his his parents, lifting him by 2 people may be required. In all of these cases, individual circumstances should be paramount instead of blanket rules.
My son is going to Afghanistan next week with the 22nd. I would love to read some of the news that is posted on these boards, but my French is very poor and we have no contacts in Quebec. Is there someone here who is bi-lingual who would be willing to translate some of the news on this...
Thanks a lot. We live at the other end of the country, though. I am in touch with the MFRC locally. I was just looking here for other English speaking families who may have soldiers who will be outside KAF.
This thread has not been active in awhile, but my son goes on his first tour to Afghanistan this month and I am looking to connect with people. Thanks.
If a soldier is single and lives far away from mom/dad/sibs, is it better for him to stay in his apt alone when he returns (should parents visit him?) or come back to home town to visit old friends & family? His choice of course, but what have you who have experienced this done?
This may not be a case of "typical" middle class kids who are just goofing off. The school has links on their web site to programs for single mothers, mental health resources and career initiatives for youth. Sounds like a reporter found an inflammatory way to describe a strategy the school...
This has nothing to do with Palin, but I believe the saying goes, " You can put lipstick on a hog and call her Lucille, she's still a pig". It sounds best when said with a Southern accent.
I really want to support my son and it is so hard when we hardly see him anyway. I was thinking of buying him a small laptop and pre-loading it with photos, music, letters from people from his home town, addresses and contact information, etc. I could also send him some DVDs. I could put...
Chimo, Right.. I guess I was surprised he was willing to give up his freedom to come and go where and when he wants...
Re: Sending care packages. I have read here that it can take up to 40 days to reach a person over there. When will he (and we) know where he will be and is it possible to...
Thank you all for responding here and via PM. I prefer to be anonymous on a public board, but am looking forward to getting to know you and learning from you. All my prior knowledge of the military came from the news until my son joined. And that was a puzzle to us. I am still trying to...
Hi, My son is going to Afghanistan next Spring, as a brand new officer and I am scared and worried about all the obvious things. To complicate things, his home unit in Canada is across the country and he is working in a second language. He tells us what he can, but he has never seemed to know...
