    Crossfit & the CF

Ack. Didn't meant to come across as having taken any offence to your posting and the link to the article. A good, albeit short, take on the "extremes I guess." HIT at one point in time was almost the antithesis to Weider and high-volume, ie if "more is better" doesn't work, then "least is...

LF no BS answer on how to get the new Ruck.

I think the ruck (not having tried it yet, so just a guess) is no more complicated to use than any other internal frame ruck. Even Kifarus come with basic instructions just to ensure that the donning/doffing happens in the right sequence (and these ARE good rucks). This ensures the most...

    Crossfit & the CF

God article. Say what he may about Arthur Jones and the marketing hype surrounding Nautilus, the HIT methodology of today is quite different from even Mike Mentzer's take on the subject (Mind and Body II). He for one went to some crazy extremes with low-volume, that did not work for me at all...

    Crossfit & the CF

Doing endless barbell curls or any other exercise for that matter is an example where "common" training philosophy has gone awry - ie. more is better, if 5 sets of 10 is good, 20 sets of 15 must be better. One could go overboard with "endless" pull-ups or "endless" squats with the same...

    Crossfit & the CF

Then the established fitness standards need to be reviewed and revised (too many easy ways out with CF EXPRES) and establish more stringent penalties for not meeting the requirements. A "not deployable" slap on the wrist (and perhaps promotions as well, but...) seems to be a copout, as a good...

And back to the principles. As stated many times before, yet seems to be glossed over, is the fact that ALL of us are different (height, weight, bone structure, muscle fibre types etc etc). The Bell curve works, I guess, as an analogy. Most of us will fit somewhere in the middle. I for one have...

    New Rucksack

I know this may detract from the New Rucksack topic at hand. Just to close the loop on the discussion on alternatives to the CTS Ruck. Pics as promised of the improvised CP Gear Gen III shoulder strap tension release strap setup

Good advice for anyone starting out. Personally, again through a lot of trial and error (and a good amount of sucking back and thinking critically about this problem set), I have found, as a hard-gainer/true ectomorph, that HIT works best for me. Hit the muscles hard in all-out effort and then...

Don't get too excited yet -  ;) I will still stick to HIT principles (looking at the CF AFP fitness self-test levels, I can reach level 4 on pretty much all exercises with only HIT (full body, one set to momentary muscular failure, twice a week) as my regime). Being a true hard-gainer (the...

True, he doesn't use these words, but isn't the point of doing any exercise to cause the body to respond to the imposed demand/stress. Your points about CrossFit, who does it and what success it has had are all valid, and I will not argue your points there. I agree completely that any exercise...

    New Rucksack

Matt, The side-release buckles (female "quick attached" behind the stock buckle attached to the nylon loop, male on the lower strap) are holding the tension. The jury-rigged setup is sturdy, is partially hidden behind the stock buckle, and holds the tension without loosening up every so often...

    New Rucksack

How did you find the Gen III shoulder straps? I had to put a set of fastex buckles with the split end "quick attach" (looped behind the slide lock) to substitute for the stock strap system. Stock Gen III kept on loosening up every couple of minutes of marching.

Understood, however, in this case "what doesn't kill you" doesn't necessarily make you stronger as well. CF protocol is cookie-cutter, and again may work for some, not for others (based on recovery ability, the level of intensity etc etc). Most people do not even understand the basic principles...

I would advise some caution here - be careful in setting a dangerous precedence that could lead very quickly to severe overtraining with resultant lack or diminished results, not to mention strain injuries and other illnesses. Bottom line - the body adapts to a specific demand. Just remember the...

    Wearing an Ancestor's Medals Mega-thread

Sorry, felt like I was stepping on toes, as in walked in on a conversation half-way. No intent to stop the debate. The wearing/display of or feelings about opposing force medals/honours is very interesting. In my experience emotions are highly charged either way. More so have I come across vets...

I was under the impression, according to ref below, that wearing any medals/decorations other than those one has earned is not allowed: http://www.forces.gc.ca/hr/dhr-ddhr/eng/faqs_e.asp#Q9 Quote: "Question May I wear a relative's medals? Answer Article 419 of the Criminal Code of Canada...

    New Rucksack

Has anyone worn the Arc'teryx Echo/Tango packs, or the CP Gear Gen III 64-pattern back-panel config with PPE/plates? Not having trialed the CTS ruck, I am assuming the main issue is with the internal aluminum stays, correct? Wouldn't other packs, such as the Kifaru line, be subject to similar if...
