I finally finished Excursion to Hell by Vincent Bramley. It's about 3 Para in the Falklands and was recommended to me by daftandbarmy a while back.
Great read. Most of the books about the Falklands were written either by journalists or officers. This one is by a grumpy lance corporal, which...
An incident in Britain last night that seems to be flying under the radar. I'll put it here for now, reproduced under the fair dealing provisions of the Copyright Act:
Armed police fill London streets day after deadly knife attack
'Mental health remains a substantial focus' of probe, police...
Interesting development. It'll be pretty tough to justify not warning somebody.
I wonder what the story is behind that British (?) army shirt he's wearing in one of the photos in the article jjt linked to...?
I wonder how much longer before someone in government decides that auxiliary cruisers are the way to go...
Why go to the bother and expense of building River and Tribal class vessels when you can simply bolt surplus guns to an existing Jervis Bay or Rawalpindi
>:D
From an article about SAR on The Weather Network: :)
Last month, Nunavut MLA Pauloosie Keyootak and two family members were found alive after being lost in the tundra for 9 days by a search and rescue group aboard a plane. Keyootak says the group got lost because of bad weather and a faulty...
If they privatized all SAR in this country, what would happen to all the various volunteer SAR organizations that currently exist?
If a company's bread and butter is air search and rescue, for example, how are they going to feel about the existence of outfits like CASARA who do it for free?
I can't help but think that if you really want action, don't bother lodging a complaint against a member of a special interest group.
I don't hold out a lot of hope that the authorities or the press here will do any better or any different from what they're doing in Europe.
I highly recommend the book; it was a very interesting and enjoyable read. I'll definitely be looking for his other one about the Dhofar War.
I recently ordered a half dozen or so books* on the Falklands to go with the ones I already have, and am about to start one on the Paras at Goose Green...
Just finishing another one on the Falklands:
The Yompers; With 45 Commando in the Falklands War
By Ian Gardiner
The author commanded a rifle company in 45 Commando during the war. The book is well written and gives some insight into the problems they faced with logistics, the weather, the...
The Red and Green Life Machine by Surgeon Commander Rick Jolly OBE.
Deals with the medical end of things during the Falklands war.
This book was discussed/recommended on another thread on this site a few weeks ago, so I ordered it from Amazon (I am somewhat of a Falklands buff).
Just a few...
I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that this is a FN community. Howling for disarmament in this case means advocating taking guns away from First Nations people and that's a can of worms I bet even Wendy Cukier wouldn't care to open.
I'd like to express my appreciation for you people who are taking the time to post in this thread.
Eight years ago, the industry I was working in went belly-up and I can tell you that when it comes to trying to find a new livelihood, every source of leads is both valuable and appreciated...
Just finishing up Red Green's Beginner's Guide To Women.
From the back cover:
...this is the essential guide to every aspect of finding a mate and then learning to deal with her growing disappointment in you.
Profound reading indeed.
You're preaching to the choir, partner.
Look at the firearm that started all this nonsense; Marc Lepine/Gamil Gharbi's Ruger Mini-14. It's a semi auto, comes in two military calibres and can be tarted up with all manner of folding, black/camo, military style stocks. And it never did make the...
The term is derived from the WWII German weapon mentioned on the last page. Slight history tangent here: German engineers were specifically told to not develop any new rifles but instead concentrate their energies on designing new submachineguns. The disobeyed that order and developed their...
I saw this this morning on the Weather Network. Reproduced here under the fair dealing provisions of the Copyright Act:
