    Reassigning Combat Arms trades

I was thinking of changing occupations.  Not simply the merging of units like the PPCLI company that joined the LdSH (RC).  I guess merging units could be an interim fix, but the goal would be permanent changing of occupations.  Such as the mention US Stryker units that have sent the MGS to the...

    Reassigning Combat Arms trades

There have been other posts regarding joining the officer trades into a general Combat Arms Officer or joining the separate MOCs into a Combat Arms MOC.  There have also been posts about reassigning combat support trades to different branches.  Here is another option for discussion. Rather the...

Light Infantry - a definition, roles, requirements, capabilities, and a vision for the future

I would like to see all light infantry and mechanized infantry battalions converted to medium infantry like the US Army Stryker infantry battalions.  Keep the LAV-III for mobility and protection, but replace the turret-equipped LAV-III with a Stryker LAV-III armed with a Protected Weapons...

    Whither the Artillery

I've read a lot about the possible M777 purchase.  Sounds okay, but I just hope they buy enough.  Three batteries of four guns for each of the three regiments should be the minimun, plus training stock of course.  I'm not necessarily a fan of converting the artillery regiments to purely mortars...

    Whither the Artillery

Good point.  But the developement of presision guided mortar ammunition is well under way.  The Merlin is one example I've read about.  I believe the US Army's Future Combat System Non-Line of Sight Mortar (NLOS-M) will been more accurate than the present mortars or artillery systems.

    RCMP Career Progression

Just wanted to clarify one thing.  BC is much different than the rest of the provinces, just because of size. Outside of BC things usually take a little longer.  I've been in for 5 years, in Manitoba.  We don't have the large number of specialty sections that BC does.  We just don't have the...

    Whither the Artillery

Excellent reply.  My only question is should a mechanic keep a costly set of wrenches and continue to take courses for repairing a vehicle he will never have the opportunity to work on??  Let's be honest, we are not likely to be charging up the highway to Baghdad or Pyongyang in the near...

The DFS Regt & other Future Armoured Regiment ideas

Why wouldn't the DFS squadrons among the three armoured regiments rather than put them all in the LdSH(RC)?  Each armoured regiment could be organized with two reconnaissance and surveillance squadrons and a direct fire support squadron.  For deployments each regiment could field three mixed...

Close Area Suppression Weapon (was Company Area Suppression Weapon)

What does "CASW" actually stand for?  I realize the weapons system is a 40mm AGL, but I was just curious what the Canadian "CASW" designation stood for.

    Veh.‘s for patrolling in BUA‘s?

The new British Army Panther Multi-role Light Vehicle (MLV) is armoured against small arms and shell splinters and has a Protected Weapons System.  Seems it would be a could patrol vehicle.  It only carries 4 personnel, including the driver and the PWS operator though.

Army Technology.com indicating Canada has ordered Javelin ATGM????

My thoughts exactly.  Isn't the SPIKE a better system?  Couldn't the SPIKE LR or ER also replace the TUA systems?  The SPIKE ER would provide better range than the TOW II, it would allow for commonality between the man-portable system and it could also be mounted on a light vehicle than the...

    Whither the Artillery

Do you Gunners think that the time is coming that the artillery regiments will be strictly mortars, no artillery at all?  The other question is can 120mm mortars replace the 105mm gun/howitzer?  I have tried researching the topic as much as possible.  I have found two articles in US military...

Renaming of Reserve Artillery Units possible

Why not just move the unit designations down one level and maintain the designations and history?  For example, could 26th Field Regiment, RCA in Brandon become 26th Field Battery, with 71st Troop and 13th Troop.  If the PR regiments are converted to mortars, each troop could be a 4-tube mortar...

The Downward Diffusion of Combined Arms

Combined Arms Battalions could be easily formed by going back to the old infantry battalion structure and simply adding a few LAV-III MGSs to the battalion. Combined Arms Battalion Battalion Headquarters/Command Platoon Headquarters Company - Orderly Room - Signal Platoon - Supply Platoon -...

    Replacing the M109s

Facing the reality of a medium-weight force, what about a regiment with three close support batteries each with 8 x LAV-III 120mm Armoured Mortar Systems and a general support battery with 4-6 LAV-III Denel 105mm SPHs.  Both battaries would have LAV-III support vehicles (ie. command post, Fire...

    Expanding the Army

I see the logic in reducing to a brigade-based structure.  I foresee a mini-corps type organization with 3-6 combat brigades under a corps headquarters with a logistics brigade, an artillery brigade, an aviation brigade and small brigades of engineers, signals, intelligence, MPs, etc. But why...

New changes to the British Army - regimental amalgamation

Big Bad John, Do you have any information on how the new medium brigades will be organized?  How many infantry battalions, light armoured regiments, etc and their TO&E.
