    Rifles Recovered in Afghanistan

Just like we used to say about all the abandoned Iraqi weapons: "Never been fired, only dropped once."

The Integrated Soldier System Project (ISSP)

I agree with lone bugler. SLA Marshall wrote a classic book called "The Soldier's Load and the Mobility of a Nation" which addresses this topic in-depth. It was always my observation that packing lists only made the problem of the soldier's load worse. I was probably as guilty as any other...

    Trooping the Colour Video

What really amazes me about these units is that not only are they outstanding parade ground Soldiers, but just as proficient at warfighting.

    The US Army at it’s 233 Birthday — June 14. 2008

Army birthday report: My buddies and I had an awesome time at the birthday party. It was at a friend's house over in Springfield and there must've been about 30 guys there, some with wives and girlfriends. The weather was perfect and so was the food. What a great way to spend our day! cheers, Mark

    The US Army at it’s 233 Birthday — June 14. 2008

I'm in Eugene, and we've had a cool spring. You know the deal, "If it ain't rainin', you ain't trainin."

US soldier launches puppy off a cliff

"Separated" is a generic word that means a servicemember is being discharged. There are three components to a discharge, the type of discharge, the separation code (specific reason why the member is being separated, and the reenlistment code.

Taliban Tells CBC to Stop "destructive and inhumane mission"

If the Taliban are so confident they're going to win, why is this guy speaking on a cell phone from "an undisclosed location?"  ;)

Charges dropped against Canadian soldier who was allegedly playing quick draw?

It sounds like ya'll have a similar system to what we have down in the USA. When a Soldier is charged with a minor offense, he always has the right to request a trial by court martial, even for something as simple as being AWOL. By waiving the right to trial by court martial, he then is...

Negative Geo. Down here in Oregon we're still high and dry.  :salute:

    The US Army at it’s 233 Birthday — June 14. 2008

I'll be heading over to the annual Army birthday party at my buddy's house. What a great time, especially since the weather looks like it'll cooperate this year. cheers, Mark

I Wanna Be In The Cavalry

I sent the link out to a couple of my old battle buddies who are still serving on active duty. One of them is the Regimental CSM for the 11th Cavalry at Ft Irwin. Looks like the song might start getting some playtime down here as well! cheers, Mark

CAN Honours Gurkhas with Canadian Forces Unit Commendation

Quite an accomplishment by this unit. The awarding of a foreign unit citation is always a milestone and it sounds like the modern-day Gurkhas are upholding the best traditions of their forebearers. Mark

Charges dropped against Canadian soldier who was allegedly playing quick draw?

Do ya'll have a process/system for non-judicial punishments in the Canadian Forces? Down here, something like this would most likely be handled as an Article 15 by the Soldier's commander instead of through a court martial.

    Leadership Questions

I fully concur with what others have already written. In addition, I'd like to add a couple of comments/observations. Please excuse my terminology in advance, but I think you'll get my point: New lieutenants come out of their armor officers basic course raring to go and for most of them, it's...

I Wanna Be In The Cavalry

I dunno. This song might've given Garry Owen a run for the money. Too bad Custer didn't get a chance to listen to this tune before he rode off to the Little Big Horn...

Why is it that the CF has not or wont get Glocks?

The thing with military service weapons is that they: 1. Need to be simple to operate under any conditions. 2. Need to be durable and remain so under a decades long service life. 3. Have to have reliable and positive safety mechanisms. 4. Have to be able to do the job they are intended to do...

    Canadians in Iraq

Seriously, I don't care what this guy wears. As long as he's doing a good job, taking care of Soldiers and accomplishing the mission, he's good to go regardless of what color uniform he has on. To me as an American, it is awesome to see a Canadian officer like this leading American Soldiers in...

    Weapon Cleaning

There are really good reasons for not using water to clean your weapons. When you field strip your rifle, there are only a few parts, but if you look at an exploded view of your rifle, you'll see that there are numerous tiny little pieces and parts. Beneath the parts you see on your rifle, for...

    Purple Heart for PTSD?

Line Doggie: I'm not convinced the VA is urging folks to file fraudulent claims for PTSD. I think this is counselors trying to take care of young service members that are transitioning back to civilian life. These VA reps know that once a veteran is back on the block, it takes at least 18 months...
