Norwegian C-130J is Down in Sweden

What a heartbreak for the Norwegians but also what a tribute to their organization to be able to find the crash site so quickly. We are not the only country with mountainess terrain which is difficult to overfly and search. I wonder if this has any lessons for Canadian SAR? When you look at...

    cool paint job

Of course the actual question is will it pass fast by the police speed checks? Will they be so surprised to see a moving shubbery they won't check the speed?

War of 1812 Bicentennial Essential Reading List

You might try reading Fix Bayonets!: A Royal Welch Fusilier at War, 1796-1815 It covers a bit more than just the war of 1812 in telling the story Of General Pearson. It touches on the Peninsular campaign. The general rose from the rank of Major to becpning the Brigade commander because he was...

Right-wingers are less intelligent than left-wingers: Study

I have a really hard time keeping my supper down when I see nonsense like this. First let me say I am politically left of center but I also know that I have been debated to a tie by some right of center individuals. But these are exceptional people who have been able to produce verifiable facts...

    Trooper Joe Ekins Has Passed

RIP Tpr Ekins, You performed an awesome feat of gunnery that day. slotted in as a gunner in a new tank crew, in your first engagement you killed at extreme range three tigers. You certainly performed magnificantly. Whether you got Witman or Maj Rad's squadron of the Sherbrooke Fusilier...

"The Game of War, a complex military board game dating from 1890"

Makes you wonder why the messes don't have Games Nights using these games or similiar to at least get SOPs driven into Junior officers and NCMs

"The Game of War, a complex military board game dating from 1890"

Very useful tools both. However I do think The Game of War, would be useful in teaching Young officers map appreciations, orders planning, keeping up unit war diaries.

Reserve units training jr Officers at the unit level.

This is an interesting question. I can speak to it from the viewpoint of the old Militia before things switched to the PRes setup. I was a member of  an Armoured Regiment, we actually had a troop of four Sherman Tanks and a training area to exercise them in. I became an officer as a...

"The Game of War, a complex military board game dating from 1890"

Actually it looks like a good training aid, It would be interesting to design a modern equivalent, replacing the cavalry with armour etc. Could be very useful in teaching combined arms training for the PRes.

"The Game of War, a complex military board game dating from 1890"

FYI, when reading the actual article, it states the auction was in Nov. 2010. Its also interesting how many people you need to play the game, 2 officers to command the two sides and officers to command the major sub units, three umpires and an officer to record the moves. It is much more of a...

Making Canada Relevant Again- The Economic Super-Thread

But I enjoy his posts. They are well written and articulate. I do not always agree with him but, sometimes, he causes me to stop, think, examine my own premises and examine my own beliefs. That is something we all need to do periodically

Making Canada Relevant Again- The Economic Super-Thread

Well training in the yard is a good start but the driver still needs to handle his machine in traffic. Driving in a pickup truck will not help the driver learn what it's like to drive on the sidewalks. And driving with the blade down is something that should only be done once in training...

Making Canada Relevant Again- The Economic Super-Thread

Interesting video. You're right Dec 21, 2011 no snow to be seen, and not just one public service union employee but two of them working as a team on both sides of the street but is it really wasted money, or is someone grabbing an oportunity for a little OJT by taking the snow plow into the area...

CF post WW2 - defence of the realm vs intrument of foreign policy

I think there is one factor that seems to be overlooked. That is the change in the composition of the Canadian Forces. Korea was the last swansong of the Militia. After Korea the Regulars were given priority over the Militia, the theory was in case of hostilities with the Soviets and the...

US soldiers 'killed Afghan civilians for sport and collected fingers as trophies

Yup things like this have happened in many wars but that doesn't make them right. I remember back in the days of the Vietnam war, the wiping out of Muy Lai at the orders of William Calley, he said it was to reduce casualities among his troops. As a YO, that seemed like a reasonable idea...

"High-ranking sources": Canada considering nuclear subs?

Whether the submarines have never fired a torpedo in anger, they did provide submarines to train against the ASW  forces and don't think that wasn't a valuable contribution in WWII and during the Cold War. Our ASW forces may have been world class, but they wouldn't have been without submarines...
