Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

This will change the way people view day sails.  I can see it now. The XO tells the Cox'n that the ship will only sail in the forenoon on Friday and give the crew sliders in the afternoon. The Cox'n will reply that won't work for the crew as it will take a sea day away from the sailors. You...

6 Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels being no longer Mothballed

The challenge with this idea, I think, is the level of complexity of the engineering of the KIN Class and the cost of maintenance. We stood up NAN in 2006 for COJT. Not too dissimilar from what we did in the 80's and early 90's. It took over a month to get things up to speed, including...

Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

I'll clarify. Naval Reservists do not have UER's. Haven't since 1989 or so.

Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

A buddy of mine had an interesting question last night about this. If you sail at 0800 Monday and come alongside at 0730 on Wednesday, do you get two days, three days or 5.94 days toward the SSI? The definition of a sea day is 8 hrs spent at sea. Is that entire 47.5 hrs spent at sea all counted...

6 Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels being no longer Mothballed

I guess the point is about why you have a Naval Reserve. If that is to have a full time flleet of ships run by full time reservists, an HQ organization manned by full time reservists, fleet schools and MOGs filled up with full time reservists, then you have essentially an operational reserve and...

6 Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels being no longer Mothballed

Greetings Oldgateboatdriver, You won't find me arguing against the model that you're describing. The challenge now is the paradigm that the Naval Reserve has placed itself regarding 'Total Force'. This is problematic on a few fronts. Primarily, the KIN Class became the exclusive domain of...

6 Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels being no longer Mothballed

This is really not a surprise. The Naval Reserve was manning 4 or 5 ships on a permanent basis prior to the MCDV's and then doubled that commitment with no corresponding increase in total establishment. The initial thought was that sailors would return to their NRD's following a posting to one...

Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

I find it interesting that they have chosen to award the SSI for 1, 3, 4, and 5 years of actual sea days. I guess that gap from 1 to 3 years isn't that significant. I agree that this will be an administrative nightmare to figure out how many days at sea people actually served.

    Canada's Naval Gap (article)

It may be timely to start following the concept of a continual ship building program. The current concept results in an entire generation of ships becoming outdated at the same time requiring a massive capital acquisition project. It also results in ship that were considered state of the art...

Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

We are one of a very few navies that retain this rank. I think that the RAN rank appears the same for Subbies and Acting and it probably makes sense that we do the same. Or you go with the idea that an unqualified commissioned naval officer does not get an executive curl and resolve the problem...

Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

I could see that we return to the former rank structure for the dress uniform where there is broad stripe with additional stripes for rear an vice admirals. As for subbies and cadets, my thoughts are that cadets will retain a single thin stripe, with no curl, acting subs will retain the same...

Naval Officers Once Again to Wear the Executive Curl

I am going to take a very much wait and see approach on this. A motion in parliament such as this doesn't have a lot of weight behind it and given that the Naval Board comments, it certainly doesn't seem to be a priority of the adults in the Navy. The comment that intrigued me was that the...

    Boatswain (BOSN)

Personally, I've always has a lot of respect for the Bosun's. They work hard and although some of them play a bit too hard, they are always willing to take on tough tasks in tough conditions. As mentioned earlier, there a lots of jokes cycling around out there about different trades but for the...

MARS Officer - Command Development Course

It will be interesting to see how this will work. There would certainly be advantages of doing it this way as those who are maybe academically inclined but who have no real potential for command might be weeded out through a course such as this. Part 1 can have a significant effect on merit...

    Naval Reserve Commissioning Policy

Once you have a commission, they can't take it away from you, unless you do something profoundly illegal. You cannot be reverted in rank to NCdt.

Balancing Reg & Res Roles in the Navy (From : Army wide Class B employment freeze!!! )

The problem is that the 10 KIN class, manned primarily with Reservists have been way over tasked with mundane (thought important) missions including MARS training, Fish pats, Sov Pats, and prescious little interesting things to do. This has has the result over the past few years of causing those...

    23 Oct 1969 - HMCS Kootenay (merged)

Worth remembering on Friday 23 Oct 2009, what happened 40 years ago. (copied from http://www.stokers.ca/hmcskootenay23october1969.htm with my thanks) On 23 October 1969, Kootenay lost nine of her own in one of the worst peacetime disasters suffered by the Canadian Forces.  She was westbound...
