    The choice for GOV GEN.

May have been a bit of drool-flecked hyperbole on that one - mea culpa How do you feel about the new tactical vest?? cheers, mdh   ;)

    The choice for GOV GEN.

Is it any surprise that Jean is anti-military? Having worked hand-in-glove with that conveyor belt of anti-American "propaganda" at the Passionate Eye (or should we call it the Passionate Lie) could she have been anything but anti-military. Anyone who has spent more than 10 seconds at Radio...

    Evolution of Attack

Hey Kirkhill - you're still in play for the reserves - come on back - we can use the manpower and experience, cheers,  ;D

    Evolution of Attack

Kirkhill, True - but there's always a danger of overstating their capabilities - and underestimating the difficulties involved. The Brits were largely forced to improvise since imperial and colonial resources were traditionally scarce. (The RAF dropping the odd bomb on Iraqi bedouins is a good...

    Evolution of Attack

Well I'm just an inspired amateur here so I want to stay in my lane - but on the other hand I don't have any deeply held preconceptions about what constitutes a purely "infantry role".  So I will raise the first question about these new tactics and strategies - what would this look like in Iraq...

War Museum Controversy and Follow-up Thread [merged]

Lahr_Brat Riel is regularly portrayed as some sort of Che Guvera of the Prairies.   The truth is that Riel was considered a dangerous Catholic apostate - nowhere more so than in 19th century Ultra-Montaine Quebec whose unreconstructed Catholicism didn't take kindly to people declaring...

    Evolution of Attack

Kirkhill, Thanks for the reference to Aden - think you might also be referring to the Dhofar War - of which I know little except that the SAS conducted on-going operations there in support of the Omani Sultan - here's an interesting link...

    Evolution of Attack

Infanteer, Interesting piece - I think in one of your prior posts you talked about smaller units utilizing new tactics (including mules) and I'm still reminded about Wingate's (not very clubbable in the officer's mess by all acounts by the way   ;D) anti-insurgency strategy in Palestine to...

    The choice for GOV GEN.

Wasn't it the New Left and their revolutionary cohorts (the kind that Jean and her husband chummed around with) who dreamed up the slogan that "the personal is political." I'm not sure what's "obvious" about this from a political perspective - except the obvious double standard applied to Harper...

Which Magazines do you like? Why?

Love Esprit de Corps (just kidding guys    ;)) I like the U.K Spectator, The New Republic, The New Yorker, and when I'm in the mood for good schmaltz - Esquire. For foreign affairs I'll grab the Guardian Weekly (believe it or not) and the Economist. Cheers, mdh

Canadians in Kandahar fire shots in self-defence

Ok - gotcha - I would argue embeds are the best practice for reporters and the CF - it provides them with access to the front while allowing the military some control in terms of where reporters go. It also creates a bond with the unit - it's pretty tough to be blatantly critical of the grunts...

    The Calling; why we join

Britney, I don't want this to turn into a dog-pile so I'll just offer up one more point - when you say isn't that effectively saying that she has more moral authority than me on the issue of Iraq? After all what is the "matter of the death her son" - surely it's the war - and by extension it...

    The Calling; why we join

No I won't cut her any slack as long as she continues to make a spectacle of herself and her "cause" surrounded by the usual Hollywood types trying to exploit a good PR event. And you're wrong about her "loss" - it was actually PFC Sheehan who suffered the bigger loss - it was his life - not...

    The Calling; why we join

Aren't you avoiding the main point here? - No one is suggesting that Sheehan's loss is not real or tragic - but she has chosen to use her son's death to arrogate supreme moral authority to her anti-war stance. Which is something different altogether. As Hitchens noted above - she has effectively...

    The Calling; why we join

Here's Christopher Hitchens' take on Sheehan - he may be bigoted, but he's not right wing (except in supporting the Iraq war as a just cause - unless that makes you a bigot by definition  ;)). mdh

Canadians oppose tough, new role for the military, poll shows

Kirkhill, Care to join me in cultural counter-revolution?   >:D   Because that's really what's at issue here. Reviving the real meaning of Remembrance Day is like reviving the real meaning of Christmas - you need people to actually believe in it. You and I know what "failing hands" means - and...

    Age Limits - Reserves

It was probably the Elgin Regiment - then an Armour Recce unit - today an Engineer unit. If you were in back in the late 70s or early 80s they would still likely have a record of your service. cheers, mdh
