Friendship and social life in the CAF

I think this is where the disconnect is. It's not that the mess staff don't do a good job trying to make the best of it for people, it's that people are busy with other things in their life and are not interested in spending time in any club, no matter how exclusive it may be. On top of that...

Friendship and social life in the CAF

Joined for the fun, benefits, and the challange. Doesn't mean I want to bury myself in the army. I've got plenty of interests outside the military that I also pursue in my spare time.

Enrollment / Swearing In Ceremony [MERGED]

The way the recruiting system is setup it technically doesn't matter what you wear, but as a point of pride show up professionally. A pair of wrinkle free dress pants, wrinkle free long sleeve collared shirt (maybe even a tie if you want), a pair of comfortable clean shoes. You don't need a...

Friendship and social life in the CAF

I rather avoid getting stovepiped in the army as a whole. I'm at work 9 out of 24 hours in garrison and 24 out of 24 hours about 2 months of the year. Sorry to break the bubble of some of the 3rd marriage RSMs out there but I'd rather spend time with my 1st wife then listen to other people...

Buying back previous reg force time/reserve time and RRSP's

Still... Last year I made 25% on my RRSPs. Granted you don't see too many years like last year, but again this year I'm up 12%. Much cheaper, yet at the same time, it's much more expensive relatively for a Pte to buy it back. Few Ptes have that kind of money laying around, and fewer still have...

I am a CAF member & I want better pay and benefits (a merged thread)

The current government has made it exceedingly clear that the CAF is just a job. It's not special, there's no "social contract". They don't take care of their soldiers as they have done in the past. I tell my subordinates not to take risks, not to rush things, not to try and lift anything over...

    CFB Cold Lake Thread- Merged

Take what you save in housing costs and put it into RRSPs, thereby lowering your effective tax rate.

Friendship and social life in the CAF

Maybe it is a generational thing, but if it is a new phenomenom, it doesn't mean it's automatically something that needs to be corrected. I'm one of those guys that only goes to the mess on order. Frankly the whole thing bores me and I never had time for drinking culture. I go to work, do a...

Good point. We should just turn the voluntary force into a volunteer force. Our soldiers should learn to live on their sense of pride and self-satisfaction. Reminds me of a joke. There was a fisherman on a wharf in Halifax. He had 3 buckets, 2 with lids labeled "Jamaica" and "Maine" and the...

That makes little sense. The purpose of Spec pay is to entice people to stay in the trade rather than leaving for better pay in the civilian side. Spec isn't and never was a benefit based on the physical difficulty of a job, or for people that don't have a transferable trade to civilian life...

I am a CAF member & I want better pay and benefits (a merged thread)

I myself don't get spec pay, but I have a couple of subordinates that do recieve it (former LCIS techs still on frozen Spec) and as their supervisor I'd fight tooth and nail to argue they are worth every penny and more, regardless of whether they make more than I do or not (they do). I know how...

No harm in a supervisor wanting more compensation than a subordinate... unless they want to lower the subordinates pay in order to make that happen. Nothing wrong with asking for more, it's when you ask that others get less it's disgraceful.

Yes, because lump sum has been such a boon to the CAF for other things. We don't need to be trying to strip benefits away from some soldiers, addition by subtraction is self defeating. If the goal is to boost the equity of the PLD system, that should be the focus. A Sgt pushing to take from a...

It's not the entitled generation when you are working for a salary and then TB comes by and cuts that salary. We don't live on wishes and unicorn dust. My comment was to what I think is the ridiculous statement by Jim, that Reservists, who generally don't rely on the military as their sole...

Glad the hobby squads are happy to bend over and take the pay reductions. Maybe they can take a bigger cut so the rest of us that do this as a job can keep our take home stable.

Army Communication & Information Systems Specialists (Sig Op, Lineman and LCIS Amalgamation)

In his defence, I don't think many are "in the MES loop". I'm ex Sig Op so it's not a big effect to me, but I have former LCIS that are waiting around looking for an answer for the past 3 years and we've got nothing out of those in the know. It's disgraceful. At least 2 years ago they would pick...

    Tablets

Yes BB10 can now run Android apps, and yes the OS is a better system, and yes, the hardware is superior to alot of android phones, and no, it won't make a difference and BlackBerry's market share of the consumer market will continue to fade.

What is this, the new news on spec pay? So basically the word is, no word for another 2 years?

    Tablets

Yes, given the 8 months since I made that post, it does seem that the current BB leadership is doing well, they've made the smart move of retreating from consumer products. They've lost the consumer market, at less than 3% they'll never have the critical mass to make more than a dent there. They...

cell phones and internet/Wi-Fi access during BMQ

In the absence of someone teaching at the school, my understanding is you can definately have your cellphone. They are very handy for courses, covering the alarm clock, camera, letting you handle personal admin and stay in touch with loved ones. Just make sure it stays on silent (not vibrate...
