    Airborne Artillery

I think I read that 2 RCHA has the same setup at the moment, with one bty using mortars only. I'm guessing this will mean that these batteries will employ either Wolf or dismounted mortars as needed when deployments arise.

    Airborne Artillery

This topic notes that one of our light batteries contains 8 mortar tubes. Do these batteries have guns as well? And if so does that mean that the other batteries not specifically linked to light inf bns use the Bison/Wolf mortar carriers on top of their own guns? Thanks for any input.

Train as you fight...fight as you Train

I think transformation's advocates would make the argument that the "old system" won't work if we are to embark on the Army's proposed deployment schedule/pace. If I understand correctly we now need to limit task force infantry contingents to two coys in order to provide the desired number of...

    NOAB for MARS wannabes

NOAB = Naval Officer Acceptance Board, if I'm not mistaken. Held twice each year, normally in May and November I believe. You go to Esquimalt for about five days and at the end of it you find out if they are going to offer you the job. Not sure if one each year is in Halifax or if they are all...

    NOAB for MARS wannabes

From talking to recent attendees at NOABs, my understanding is that aside from tours and a large number of classes there is one panel interview and one extremely challenging exam covering all sorts of subjects. Apparently most seem to think they failed it but that doesn't seem to stop a job...

Should Armour crew the TUA? Which type of unit should it be in?

Interesting. Not sure why they don't just give the whole unit the Strathcona capbadge, and properly unify it as a DFS regiment. It seems to me capbadge affiliation is being taken a little too far, but I suppose a black hat on all heads is a step in the right direction, for what it's worth.

Why is Australia DOD so much faster than NDHQ to act????

Well, to be fair, eight consecutive balanced budgets can be considered "fiscally responsible". But I suppose a record of questionable procurement choices could certainly be deemed irresponsible.

    Canadian Armoured Cavalry

2B, Would bringing the LAV 111/Coyote intregration concept down to the troop level be advantageous? Your idea of a mixed sqn sounds like an ideal mech direction for the CF. I see a mixed tp as having two surv vehs supported and assisted by two inf vehs, with the inf perhaps taking on more of a...

Divining the right role, capabilities, structure, and Regimental System for Canada's Army Reserves

If the British Army can successfully amalgamate historic units then surely we can do the same. It doesn't even have to involve the complete elimination of our reserve regiments as we know them now. Unit identities can still be maintained if we want to do that, with, say, a regiment like the...

Bisley Team - Then and Now

I was suprised when they invited me back in '94, but didn't hesitate to take the offer. Not as good a summer as '93, but still fun. And it meant I could finally wear that gold rifle after four summers of trg!

Bisley Team - Then and Now

That's pretty impressive. We won the AG Bell, which was a great thing at the time, as our competition were outstanding shooters. The '93 trip was the best summer of my life, despite the fact that the entire Bisley team save one was RTU'd just before returning to Canada! Hard to resist a pint or...

Beret or forage cap with DEU

The old green forage caps looked plain and ugly, berets are a better choice. Forage caps with coloured bands (CGG, GGFG etc.) look very sharp, mind you.

    MARS Training [Merged]

JRR: Thanks very much for your insight. I applied as a regular MARS officer two years ago and am waiting to hear about acceptance to the Board. Testing etc. was finished over a year ago. My file is taking its time due to a VFS (I was an Army Reserve NCM during university) and the fact that I...

Combat Team of tomorrow? Mechanized Infantry Company of tomorrow?

"Slat" cages on our various LAV variants could provide some significant protection against the RPG threat, allowing less of a hump for dismounted soldiers. Could our LAVs handle the added weight? Strykers don't have the added weight of a turret, but I recall reading that they are overly heavy...

    Armored vehicle preference

GW: Given the choice, I would take a tracked and well armoured Canadian Army over a wheeled one, or perhaps our current structure with one tracked and armoured, single-rotation, pure warfighting brigade for emergency use, as our LAV BGs are probably ideal for the majority of our current...

    Armored vehicle preference

While I like the Thunderbolt, as I detailed above, it occurs to me that a LAV battlegroup needs a vehicle that is as fast as a LAV to achieve effective direct fire support. Would this be as major a concern as I think it is? I would think a LAV would need to exploit its speed to survive, so slow...

    MARS Training [Merged]

RyanNS: I'm not sure if your time abroad will be an issue. I spent a year away in the UK and Thailand during 1999, working and travelling, and I believe it has seriously delayed my application. Post 9/11 they have to do more intensive checks to ensure I am not a shady Taliban operative. They...

    MARS Training [Merged]

I applied for DEO MARS two years ago...almost there, I believe. Hopefully you haven't lived outside of Canada recently and you don't have prior service... In two years I've learned a lot about going MARS and I've talked to young MARS officers and other applicants who have actually made it to...
