Canada's purchase of the Leopard 2 MBT

There is. The term "Armoured Branch" was used for a while but it seems to have gone back to RCAC in the 70s: http://www.rcaca.org/ http://www.regiments.org/regiments/na-canada/cav/RCAC.htm http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/mediawiki-1.5.5/index.php?title=Royal_Canadian_Armoured_Corps

Titan and Trojan PutThrough Their Paces

Here is the Leopard 2 equivalent of Trojan, known as Kodiak, just adopted by the Swiss. It would be good if some of Canada's Leopard 2 chassis could be converted to a similar standard. Surely some could also be made into bridgelayers (equivalent to Titan). I know there is a Leo2 AVLB used by the...

    For Wes

Most countries' militaries (including those of the US, UK, Australia and Canada) have pretty much the exact ORBAT of their units in Iraq and Afghanistan on official websites, along with (in some cases) literally thousands of photographs of men and equipment (usually with captions giving names...

LAV III RWS versus LAV III with turret

Isn't the Bison still needed as a mortar carrier? Can a modified LAVIII do this job? Or am I way off the mark?

German submarine menaces the North Sea 61 years after its sinking

Don't know if it was the first time a Brit sub had sunk a U-Boat but IIRC it was the first time a submarine had sunk another while both were submerged.

    HMCS Bonaventure, Post-Unification Questions

Carrier COs (usually Captains) in the Royal Navy today and AFAIK in the past are surface warfare officers. They are not often aviators and may even be serving on a carrier for the first time. In the Royal Navy full-time aviators are rarely promoted beyond Lieutenant Commander- to gain further...

    North Africa

Yes, I should have mentioned that while HQ 1st Australian Corps saw action in Greece, Syria and the Western Desert, it never commanded more than one Australian division in action at a time; it did however command various British, Indian and New Zealand formations. The Australian government was...

    North Africa

It's a bit more complicated than that. The Canadian leadership, both civil and military, wanted the Canadian Army to go into action as a whole, rather than in small units split between various British commands. (There was already some conflict over the Brit policy of posting members of the RCAF...

    106mm Recoilles Rifle

Like I said, to my knowledge it was never actually used in action. I think the 106 was meant to be fired from outside the Ferret. These days South Africa's paratroops still have 106s, but towed behind an 8x8 all-terrain vehicle (of Canadian design but built in SA)...

    106mm Recoilles Rifle

Or this badboy- Ferret with 106mm recoilless as used by South Africa's 44 Para Brigade in the 1980s. AFAIK never actually used in action.

Harry and William and their military service.

You can't join the Royal Marines from Sandhurst. RM officer training is entirely separate and is all done at the Commando Training Centre RM at Lympstone. It also takes about a year.

Popular war movies depicting Canadian soldiers ...

Beurling never actually made it to Israel, he was killed in an aircrash in Italy on the way there. There were quite a few Canadian and other Commonwealth fliers (mostly but not all Jews) in the fledgling IAF though. My great-uncle, a former South African Air Force Dakota pilot, ended up flying...

    Battalion Designations

As I explained above it happened again in WW2, though not to the same extent. If you follow my link or search the regiments.org site you will find plenty of examples.

Photos from the Victoria and George Cross association

WO2 Keith Payne was there (he is in at least one of the pics). He is the only living VC from Vietnam, twoo of them were posthumous (Maj. Badcoe and WO2 Wheatley), the other (WO2 Simpson) died quite a while ago. One of the World War 2 Gurkhas was there too.

Expert floats idea of Canadian aircraft carrier

Like in the Falklands War... the Invincibles were indeed designed as convoy ecorts but managed to do alot more. Small carriers are obviously less capable, but they are better than nothing. My opinion? Canada should get a Dutch/Spanish type LPD (or two) and be done with it. As has been said...

    The Devil's Guard

Sven Hassel-esque war porn. Utterly unbelieveable. I don't have time to elaborate now but I will later.
