    Naval Reserve Issues

I guess everyone seems to be on the same page then, as this was what was relayed to us during a "fireside chat" with the navres commodore/formation chief.

    Naval Reserve Issues

When I heard her say that in December, I thought "ok, a given ship might only sail 130 days, but given manning issues, I'd bet the average sailor will be spending much more time at sea than that, just on a different ship".

Graduate student in Naval reserve ?

I think I'd agree about the problems of time commitments.  I've seen people in grad school parade/go on exercise regularily, though they admitted that it really broke their brain after, trying cope.  I've also seen full time law students do the same.  Myself, I'm starting grad school part time...

Navy possibly going with a six man duty watch

THe MCDVs do indeed do this, and it seems to work pretty well.  Though you do get a weird sense of deja-vu when doing rounds...

Tory minority in jeopardy as opposition talks coalition. Will there be another election?

I could see the Liberal/NDP coalition comming to pass, but it might be pretty unpalatible for many Liberal MPs.    Might this be enough to push Ignatieff and a few others into crossing the floor?

    Looking for FDU hoodie

My guess would be Fleet Dive Unit, since this is in the navy subforums.

    A threat to Army.ca

Unfortunately, it seems that the truth (ie. facts) are not always a defence in a human rights complaint.

Organizations moving away from Military Style Uniforms - Split fm Army Cadet

That doesn't mean that we can't dress real neat, from our hats to our feet, and surprise 'em with a victory cry.

Organizations moving away from Military Style Uniforms - Split fm Army Cadet

Actually, it was President Kennedy that started the trend of men going hatless.  I think.

New Name requred for the CSE Branch

Based on the amalgamation of technical trades, have you heard anything about amalgamation of different ops trades?  Once in a while, one hears rumours of this happening.  If it were, has anyone from ops looked for any practices or lessons learned from what you've been working on?

More sailors needed for Canada's warships

I think the navy needs to be realistic about what it can expect in terms of retention.  Perhaps the "worst" scenario is where someone joins, spends 6-12 months on BMQ/PAT/NETP, then 1.5 doing their QL3, only to get another 2.5 years of service, as they have released and found civilian work with...

More sailors needed for Canada's warships

I think to a certain extent this is already done.  I know at least one instance where a Mcpl served plenty of time in reg force, took the pension, switched to reserves, and just teaches BMQ most of the year.  Now, I doubt this practice is especially widespread, but could certainly serve as a...

    Gag Bos'n Pipes

The funniest gag pipe I ever heard was an actual bosn' pipe that had been played with.  We had a brand new AB, fresh of NETP, who had hardly ever used a call before (so he didn't really remember what it looked like).  So, when he was double-banked as quarter master, the supervising QM had the AB...

    MCDVs and future usage

Even when the aops come, I doubt that we will see the mcdvs vanish.  I think we will keep a few so that we don't loose (anymore) minewarefare capacity.  I'd guess we would leave two active and one down ship on each coast, with the rest of the crews going to the aops.  We still need the mcdvs for...

The Merged Thread on Gay/ Homosexual Topics and the CF.

Dr. Irwin had taught a course in military anthropology at the U of C last fall.  While discussing the notion of going "field gay", she had mentioned one case in a visit to Afghanistan where a lesbian soldier had told her (Dr. Irwin) that she (the lesbian) was actually going "field straight"...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

There have often been troubles in finding enough shads for the MCDVs to sail.  I doubt that this would be a more popular option, once the novelty of not always being on an MCDV wears off.

What not to do - No excuse BMQ tips [Merged]

I would have thought that as long as the powerbar was properly kit-marked, there would be no issue  ;)
