Sorry, I'm with @brihard on this one. He's a gun smuggler who has embarrassed the CAF, betrayed his commission and cast a bad light on all lawful gun owners. If the CAF retains him (doubtful) his usefulness is seriously impaired.

I didn't take a detailed look at this legislation yet, but at first blush there appears to be come overlap with existing Crim Code offences such as using an imitation firearm (s. 85) and possession for a dangerous purpose (s. 88). More later after work.

Saw this setup at work a couple of weeks ago. I'm not a big fan of Glocks but the 45 is the first one I've shot that I didn't hate. As for the CAF coming on board, that ship has sailed. CBSA or other armed federal agencies (fish cops, game wardens, rail cops) could jump on board.

I don't think it was so much a choice, but a reccommendation from the vendor that the CAF ran with for simplicity sake.

Without a LOT of practice, it's often hard to get an accurate first shot at distance with a DA/SA. Sometimes one shot is all you get. Most coppers don't practice as much as they should/could so the simpler a duty firearm is to shoot, the better.

So had I until my driver from that deployment arrived at our College as a recruit about 7 years ago. While undergoing UoF training he brought up those scenarios during conversations with me.

Now that we both work in LE, I'll bet, like me, that you reflectively find some of those use of force scenarios to be even more absurd.

Some of those scenarios were dumb as hell. "Population Encounters - How to deal with civilians." 50 % of his TF were P Res who were "civilians" only a short few days prior. The most challenging part of that deployment was the Commander and his daily dress state directives. No dark lenses...

You're assuming those "fishing boats" are actually really fishing boats and crewed by fishers and not by PLAN crews.
