British Army trials drone warfare from moving tanks

It strikes me that this is an important field to do trials on. I'm quite skeptical that a fourth crewman in the tank to control drones is the answer. That narrows the focus to much on a single vehicle instead of the combined arms team. Tank squadron's working on their own are even more...

    2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

I think we're showing signs of making all the right decisions about our air force and navy - assuming we stay with the F35 - and a bigger role in the Atlantic / Arctic passages would be a good idea. Considering this US administrations fetish with Greenland, I don't think that they are prepared...

Air Force major charged in firearms bust in Kingston, Petawawa

Holding the cup with one hand while spooning it into my mouth with the other while trying to type with the limitation that I only have two hands. All clean now. :giggle:

    2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

It's one of those I'm partially on board but not otherwise. The cost issue is mostly a red herring. Unless those 5,000 are part of an overall force reduction the costs will mostly a wash. The US already owns the infrastructure, it's not like it will be sold off. The costs to maintain those...

    Littoral Operations

I've been thinking that Canada has been thinking small with its HIMARS purchase. We have enough to support a deployed div - 18, but only another ten to be a second line reinforcement and tech reference/training equipment. IMHO we need at least another 18 - six for each of the three coasts to...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

I don't know what it is, but since first seeing the early prototypes of Ripsaw tearing around all types of terrain at speed I've just always thought of them as the standard to beat. I simply can't understand why they haven't been bought at scale by the US Army for dozens of uses. 🍻

Air Force major charged in firearms bust in Kingston, Petawawa

Yup Yup. Mine look like this. Interesting - while I was searching for an image I saw the calibre as 577/450. I always thought it was the other way around. Live and learn. 🍻

Indirect Fires Modernization Project - C3/M777 Replacement

:giggle: The Bofors with a naval mount was identified as a Boffin. Here's an article on the ones on the Haida. 🍻

Air Force major charged in firearms bust in Kingston, Petawawa

Then you don't want to hear this but I bought it near Barrie in 1963 or 4 for $40.00 with 5 live rounds (recent manufacture) thrown in. I still have those. (Damn - anyone got any idea how to clean yogurt out of a keyboard) 🍻2

Air Force major charged in firearms bust in Kingston, Petawawa

When we finally moved the rest of our furniture and effects from our storage shed in Manitoba to our new home in SW Ontario, I rented a Ryder truck from North Dakota to drop off in Detroit. The cost was about half of a U-Haul and we were taking the US route. I have three guns - all trigger...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

FYI. Has anyone posted this CBC link before? I've mentioned elsewhere, some time ago, that I've built a model expansion army and find it hard to logically get above a field army of 30,000 regulars and 50,000 reservists. (That leaves aside the institutional training arm and static support base...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

Yea. We would have only bumped into each other at conferences. During that timeframe my basic bailiwick was MilArea Prairie working out of Brandon and Winnipeg and the odd court martial elsewhere. 🍻

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

Funny that you should mention that. I started my career both regular and reserve force as a gunner but transferred to the reserve force in 1981 to go to law school and become a reserve legal officer until 2009. I was active in the branch from around 1983 so might know your dad and undoubtedly...

    Infantry Vehicles

That's basically it. It's a relatively cheap and not heavily armoured vehicle intended for rear area command posts, ambulances etc etc etc. It would be nice to have a common chassis but if one wants to make a proper IFV then it needs more armour, heavier weapons etc and that means a bigger...

Indirect Fires Modernization Project - C3/M777 Replacement

Me too. Me too, again. The M119 entered service in 1989. We bought our G1s in 1996. The M119A3s upgrades came in around 2013. Our M777s have a different fire control system from the US. We use the Brit/Leonardo LINAPS. the LG1 has no digital but could receive a LINAPS if someone thought it...

    Infantry Vehicles

But . . . but . . . what about the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (formerly Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle)??? If the M2 and M3s are to be replaced by MICVs then why have a bunch of general purpose carriers running around with 30mm turrets. Interim solution? New contender? 🍻

Indirect Fires Modernization Project - C3/M777 Replacement

No doubt. Notwithstanding there is some need for symmetry and if you have historic names why not use them, my take from the direction of the government so far is that it is turning to large L logistics in a number of ways. Even the army is evolving by adding two svc bns and a sustainment bde to...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

I quite like Rory but we don't agree on every issue. My feelings about bureaucracy and its fetish with trying to solve simple individual leadership or management failures with massive paper responses that become incomprehensible to most of the worker force is something that predates my first...
