Canada to Spend $5.0Bil on AEW Aircraft (Saab Globaleye)

HASC and SASC had already been threatening the USAF over the zero E-7. They are supporters. The fact is one needs redundant systems. NRO will tell everyone that they (and Space Force) cannot do everything when it comes to imaging and communications especially in contested environments.

CAF Security Forces [Split from RCN Anti Drone Weapon]

Depends on how they are used -- realistically the Minister can waiver away anything respecting to status - But yeah I think there needs to be some Civilian PO training in respect to the UofF and powers of arrest.

Theoretically the contract DoD Police are supposed to do that -- however I know a lot of places the numbers of those LEO's are way too low to actually man all the gates. I suspect the USAF sites you go to are often live bombing ranges, which has a different setup than JB Lewis-McCord. I...

NATO Compatible doesn't necessarily mean NORAD compatible. SOCOM and the ABC's vice USAF, also it is more a ELINT bird as opposed to a AEWCC. There is a big difference between between being a high altitude listener, and a radar bird running AESA - so I am not sure the work there is compatible...

CAF Security Forces [Split from RCN Anti Drone Weapon]

If you look at the organization of the USAF Security Forces, you can probably draw a idea that every Air Force Base gets a Squadron - and some of the largest Facilities get a Group which is three Squadrons. The USAF Security Forces Squadrons are generally around 140-160 personnel, in 3-4...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

It wasn’t an aircraft. It was an airframe. You can’t sell an airframe. The avionics, radar weaponry was all seriously under developed. It was like Canada had missed the memo that guns were not the primary anymore. The weirdest aspect to the cancellation was the destruction of all the...

@Kirkhill also tends to gloss over that BAE acquired several Swedish Defense companies at fire sale prices as they were going insolvent due to lack of market. The only reason a lot of those projects are in the market is because they are marketed by a Global Defense Conglomerate.

Agreed, but one needs vastly less steel than aluminum for the same protection. Ballistically, you end up with almost the same weight (and a lot more bulk) using aluminum alloys compared with a steel alloy. The Bradley A4 Chassis has relatively little aluminum in it. Materials that were...

As steel is a much harder denser material inch for inch it is a vastly superior ballistic material than aluminum. Opt for wider tracks if necessary to keep ground pressure low to offset the weight.

Yes but Ukraine is in a different situation than Canada (or the US). Despite some romantic thoughts to the contrary everyone already works like that. You’re putting Ukrainian situations into a Canadian setting - which doesn’t fit. 2nd and third line are not factory personnel. 4th line...

Steel also burns at a much higher temp than aluminum… I’ll take the steel for most applications.

    Right to Repair

I’d suggest the Government(s) and Industry are better off understanding they are in a partnership. Items where it is practical should able to be repaired at the lowest level possible. If it makes sense for a part to be printed - then provide the government with a license to do so. I...

Interesting, the only really significant external change is the front glacis plate geometry. I guess forgoing the amphibious ability and easy access to the engine for additional armor and potentially better obstacle climbing.

    Right to Repair

It is more than that. Most contracts have a TDP option in them, and the USG has often not chosen to opt for that. If you do not own the rights to something… Most current contracts are now just accepting the upfront costs and TDP ownership goes to the government. The problem with a lot...

Everyone pays the cost somehow. Sometimes it is paid in spades by future generations.

The other wrinkle I would say on top of your cheap, good, fast triangular matrix is also Domestic production. My response about the Arrow above tries into this as well. I am a firm believer that Canada with its relatively low needs, is often better suited buying into Allied programs...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

The Arrow is an interesting piece of the puzzle. But even the most staunch defender of the program has to admit there where a lot of ‘fitted for not with’ aspects to the Arrow that tend to get glossed over. Canada made a decision at that time to hobble itself. Rather than either invest...

But you have to admit with the CBO documents we are a lot more transparent about Defense dollars than Canada. To me the reaction from down here is more due to years of Canadian promises, that have not materialized.
