It's been a few years Jamie. I'm trying to get ahold of Sid. He'd be the fella that would know the Gunners from your Dad's time. Wish I had held onto a nominal roll when I left. My apologies those names aren't ringing a bell. I'm also trying to get ahold of a former Gnr. bud who was with the Bty...
Still around. Cannot believe how long since I posted last. 7 great grandchildren since that posting. Some health problems related to service. Which VAC has been out standing in their help.
Mark, I've down loaded the picture and will be speaking to my former mother-in-law who was in Werl in that time frame. Her husband was RCAMC. Unfortunatly he has passed on and she is in the early stages of altzheimers, but still has long term memory. I also know of some one else (distant cousin)...
Ahh the SSM Btys. There'll never be a unit like they were. Out standingly effiecient, high moral and just some of the craziest people around. For many of those who served in them and have passed on, my memories of you shine bright.

Being a bit of a curmudgeon here, but I've always thought of songs being of British origin in our army and the chants especially are some thing picked up from the Americans. I believe songs might have been an in thing in WW 1 & 2 and really never saw anything that was passed onto us in the army...
Yes Old Sweat: I can well believe that happening. I eventually remustered to the cook trade. When posted to CFB Winnipeg the base commander was strict on dress in the mess. Fighter pilots passing through dressed only in flight gear would have to come up the back way to the kitchen from the bar...
I'm not the fastest thinker on the block, but Old Sweats comments about the state of the Cdn. Forces of the time got me thinking.
Now I know in our unit ( 3 Sigs Sqn) all troops were committed to an infantry role except for the cooks. Name a trade in the Sqn and it was out there. In the case of...
Interesting. I always thought the War Measures Act was enacted that Thanksgiving week end in Oct/70 when we were called out. Also mentioning about ammunition. We were initially issued 40 rounds of ammunition than a further 20 at around 0300 hrs of morning that we were informed that Mr. LaPorte...
I had a thought (dangerous those things) while looking through the history forum. About the FLQ Crisis. There must be veterans like my self who served during the FLQ Crisis, as I did. I was with HQ's & Sigs 3 CMBG. Our role in Ottawa was security at DND HQ's on Elgin St and various dignitaries...

I have two aerial photos taken from an L-19 by a Gnr friend of mine who was serving in 2 RCHA and scrounged a ride one day and took photos. They are of the SSM Bty MT Park and of the...
Hi it's me again. I see lots of mention about basketball, but lets not forget hockey. The Artillery fielded one of the best hockey teams in 4 CIBG. Many members of the RCA were posted to Germany for that express purpose. There is a memorial plaque to the Canadian Hockey Assoc. of 4 CIBG for...
You are dead on Old Sweat. That was often told to us when we were still an active unit. The unit was known for getting it's rocket into the designated spot (not area but spot) for it's air burst explosion. Also the people who handled the wreckers and cranes ( looked similar but different lift...
I was still with 2 SSM in the summer of 64. There would have been to firings of rockets. One in the spring on the base ranges in Shilo in the late spring and the next in the summer at the Wainwright concentration.
And in reference to them going by firing their Sterling's (SMG's) at your...
I just came across a video in You Tube about 3 RCHA advertising a site called http:\\3rdherd.com . I can't pull this site up on the internet. Any body know about it out there? The idea behind the site was to get former members of 3 RCHA into sharing memories. Incidentaly I have a movie clip of...
I did my tour in CFS Alert 28 May to 27 Nov 1980. That's when females were first posted in. Some time around August I think (been awhile). They did a survey on the females being posted there. Recently came across the follow up request on the survey. Any how I was the baker for 6 months one of...
Hi Tomahawk6. I should have stated that this happened in 72/73 in Germany. I really don't remember any thing good about them then, but you did get those free cigarettes in them. Which were popular to give to the locals. I also remember in 71 in Norway on a Northern Defence of NATO Ex. that we...
This is a really good conversation going on here. So I'll throw my 2 cents in. My wife who is a Mennonite born in the Ukraine had an Uncle killed while serving in the Wehrmacht of WW 2 and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class. So now you say a ha a traitor to Russia. Well now lets understand...
A bit facetious, but I remember some one saying on Exercies as we ate American C rations. That no wonder they lost in Vietnam feeding these to the troops. ::)
