Feds to announce home bases for new fighter jets

Admitting my own complete ignorance here, but understanding in peace time we save fuel when required, would the drill not be to go to wide-open-thrust if we were actually intercepting something that was coming to bomb us?

    Re-enter the Battle Rifle?

I concur with Kevin. The proponents will state that we used them for decades and they fired 7.62 accurately so it should be easy to go back to them, but there are just too many reasons not to use them. What you're proposing something like taking an old Dodge Challenger and trying to retrofit...

    The Bin Laden Conspiracy

IMO it wouldn't matter if the US sent every single soldier they had over there and spent a trillion dollars, as T2B says the ground over there just isn't like anything we have over here and I think people can be hidden indefinitely. With Saddam Hussein I think it was just blind luck, but the...

Feds to announce home bases for new fighter jets

Max, What are your thoughts on this?  You've posted a few times before about a jet's top speed and how little it actually gets used, but in a case like a true intercept how much do you feel like a fighter having a top speed of mach 1.8 vs 2.5 would matter? Is it really as simple as us getting...

British, Canadian troops smuggling Afghan heroin: report

The CBC TV news coverage on it seemed a lot more balanced, not slanted/toned as anti-military as the internet stories read.

    BMOQ---how is PT??

This is not a case of one-up-ism, but I know that a whole lot of my peers and I did 500+/day on several courses, from CAP to Ph3 to Basic Para. Years later as a course officer I challenged some candidates to do 1,000 in a day and they did (for a reward).  And they were legit PSP standard, too...

    The Bin Laden Conspiracy

I'm not so sure, but it would be interesting to see the results of a US-wide survey. Personally I think that a lot of them would rather have closure, in that they'd like to see a clean-cut young Marine hauling him out of a hole somewhere with zap straps on, and they'd like to see him on trial...

Building a bomber plane in just a day, WWII - BBC

Not when it takes decades just to decide which plane you're going to make.  Building it may take centuries.

    BMOQ---how is PT??

I hope you're kidding that you consider that a lot in a day. For anyone reading this who will be going to Gagetown after St Jean: 75 push ups is probably the easiest day you will ever have.

    ATVs

That's almost a crime if that project was cancelled, seeing how many people are on pensions for screwed up backs. Not sure how you'd make it work without steering it (for another 20 years, anyway) if you]re too busy for remote control...possibly some sort of "follow me" key fob that it just...

Haha, thanks for providing me with a great website (failbook.com).  Just found this gem:

    BMOQ Sept 2010

As a tip for you guys if you are going to do that, please remember it is a small world in the CF, so anything you post publicly should be things that you wouldn't mind your staff seeing. For example, don't post "Can you believe how much of a ____ Sgt ____ was today?", and don't post photos...

Canadian Forces with the American Forces?

We're partners.  I have done training exercises on 6-7 US bases, about half of those inter-operating with them, and we're side by side overseas with overlapping support capabilities. For example, there might be a joint operation planned in side by side towns that Canadian artillery guns support...

    ATVs

I think that's actually a pretty useful solution and comparison.  We don't always bring the toboggans with us, and we wouldn't always bring ATVs, either.  But when required, they could be brought to take the load, one would be the Pl HQ one, and good to go.

Mechanical Breaching (From: Canada's purchase of the Leopard 2 MBT)

Sidebar, but for you tank experts what was the downfall of the flail?  Did the roller just prove to do the same thing without having to replace the chains? My outsider hypothesis would be that in WW2 tanks weren't that powerful so a flail was easier than pushing a roller that was so heavy, but...

    ATVs

MCG, The problem that needs solving is that dismounted soldiers are carrying far more weight than the NATO-accepted maximum standard of 30% of their body weight. And no matter how many people want to quote the books and say that we are all Mech Bns now, the ground truth is that every year...

    Remembering 9-11 (merged anniversary thread)

That other people did it does not make it okay. We were at war against countries, and I am 100% all for everything we did against those countries. That does not make it okay to racially discriminate against people who were completely innocent (which we did). My original post was merely to...

    Remembering 9-11 (merged anniversary thread)

But when we say "they" (their general population), are we potentially not just talking about a small percentage of them who are protesting? They see media coverage of a small percentage of us burning Qurans and assume it's all of us, and we see a small percentage of them protesting and chanting...

Canada's purchase of the Leopard 2 MBT

Really?  If so good news. I'm not a tanker, but two years ago it was not the 2A6s with the rollers but the older (smaller) variants. On of my best memories was seeing a Leo (C2 I think) take an IED hit on the roller, shake it off, then traverse to 3 o'clock and blow a 6' wide hole in the mud...
