hello
my name is james murphy and i am writing from england.
i am researching 2 canadian heores for a book on liverpool-born VC winners.
names: arthur herbert richardson VC Boer war
hugh mackenzie vc WW1.
neither man is well known in england.
i am trying to build up a detailed profile of both men(outside of their vc action) prior to their service days and i have some basic information on their early days in liverpool prior to them emigrating to canada.
is there anyone with information on either of these 2 men which they would be willing to share with me.

regards

james murphy

There are numerous places to search listed in a Topic on that subject in this Forum.  They include the Public Archives of Canada, where their records would be kept.  You could also try the websites and archives of the Regiments to which they belong.  The Canadian War Museum also has articles and Bios on many Canadian Soldiers, especially VC Winners.

You may find some info on this site on The Canadian Anglo-Boer War Museum for Richardson.

The London Gazette Archive would also list both men.

Have you tried using google?

I typed in arthur herbert richardson VC Boer war and got numerous hits.

Here are a few to get you started,

hi
thanks for the quick reply.
i have all the statndard info from the net.
it is the little, personal details i am after, such as emigration, where they lived in canada, jobs worked, marriages, etc.
i want to try and personalise their lives as much as possible rather than give a bio of service life and detail the vc action.
i will keep trying.

As you may know, Richardson is buried in Liverpool and there was a bit of a media frenzy just before Labour came to power as he was without a gravestone.

I am in Gettysburg now and will not be home for a while, but recall an article on him. I hope I can find it, but the gist includes: his stated civilian employment was dentist; he was a sergeant/staff sergeant in the NWMP; and he apparently was released for 'drug addiction.' Do not take any of the first and last bits as gospel until I am able to confirm or deny them.
