Then why do they feel the need to call these the '09s?

has been happening since the 60's, take alook at the 64 mustang which really was a 63 1/2, they always release next years models half a year ahead, i think it has to do with the fiscal year not the calendar year

I know it is common practice, but it still seems that the next year's model keeps coming out earlier & earlier.

Should the CFPAS adopt the same policy and the leadership issue PERs for 2010 NOW?  ::)

Personally, I don't know why the automakers do this, but it's rather frustrating.  "The 2009 Corolla, actually built in 2007...."

There's an XRS model again!?  Be still, my beating heart.

Ignore my signature this one instance.

And it does seem odd. "Built in 2007 released in 2008 considered to be 2009".

A quote from the South Bend Tribune:

The 2009 Toyota Corolla is unveiled at the Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas on Wednesday. The new vehicle is expected to begin appearing in dealerships early next year.

It does seem weird I mean wouldnt it be funny owning a 2009 but your sticker expring in 2008? OR January 2009? I was almost tempted to go to the Toyota dealership across from where I work and ask for a brochure if they had it yet. That XRS makes me drool.
