this is for all the 48th highlanders guys. I was just wondering whats the regiment is like ie. the soldiers, training etc etc. I have to do all of my basic training so I guess I have alot to look forward to. Just out of curiousity about the regiment

come up to the mess this friday and talk to the guys. you‘ll get a lot more information over a couple beers than I can provide on here.

48th highlander: I can just come up to the mess without being a member?

If you don‘t need to be there, don‘t show up at the normal parade time, but come down around 2200hrs. Find someone with a 48th headdress, and just ask if it‘d be alright for you to come into the mess. That‘s just a formality, if you‘ve been recruited you‘re more than welcome to come drink with us. Everyone‘s pretty friendly so you should have no problem finding someone to tell you what you want to know.

what do u mean by formality?. I‘ve been recruited bt sgt.Duncan. I‘ve finished all my tests just waiting to be sworn in

If you‘re not a member, you‘re not allowed in the mess unless a member invites you. That‘s what I mean by "formality", you should ask someone if you can come up. Technicaly I‘m inviting you right now, but I‘ll be away teaching on a course, and I‘m not going to post my name on this forum, so you‘ll have to ask someone else when you come down. Don‘t worry, they‘ll say yes.

cool. what usually goes on in the mess? and am I allowed to drink even if i‘m 18? haha

now do you really expect me to answer that in a public forum? people drink, talk, play pool and foosball, all the usual things. underage drinking is against the law. ‘nuff said.

yeah makes sense. stupid post.
so I just ask anyone from 48th in the admin area to take me up to the mess? and do many people like me do this?

I brought 2 brand new recruits up to the mess last week. It‘s a good way for you to get a feel for the regiment, and if you enjoy yourself, you‘re that much less likely to quit during your summer course. So I try to encourage it as much as possible.

mind you, the basic training course athmosphere will be very different from the one back in the regiment.

As an aside I have just read the history of the 48th Highlanders (a Family of Volunteers, by Beal). Excellent read, especially in you are thinking of joining the 48th.

Makes me wish I was still in a Highland unit. <tear>.

Graeme, I‘ve been with the 48th for two years and I haven‘t regretted my choice. I work with some great folks, and I like to think we have the right mix of work and play. And, for keeping traditions alive, and overall social events, I think the 48th are spot on. When I was in BMQ, and not allowed to parade with the unit, one of my first introductions to 48th traditions was our Men‘s Christmas Dinner. Although I couldn‘t wear uniform for it, I had a great time and got to know some of the folks I would later work closely with after finishing my recruit courses.

But, like 48Highlander said, come to the mess on a parade night, introduce yourself to someone who will extend the invitation to let you in, and meet some of the guys and gals.

Guys in almost every regiment will tell you they work with the best guys, etc., but the only way to find out is to check things out for yourself.

Medcorp, try and find someone who has "Dileas". It‘s a very complete history of the unit, up until I think the 60‘s. Someone brought around a copy once a couple of years ago, it is like dictionary thick. But alas it is also a very very rare book. The last time someone was selling a copy it went for almost $300. If you are interested in the history of the 48th, our museum is located in St. Andrews Church (beside Roy Thompson Hall).

From what i know about the 48th they are really nice people. They occasionally do affiliated unit training with my cadet corp 142 Highlanders - The original affiliated unit with the 48th. I recently had dinner with the CO Lt. Col Sargeant and Drum Major Ressor of the 48th - Theyre both very nice people enthusasitc about recruiting. Whether your looking for band or infantry 48th is what your looking for. Plus you will be lucky enough to wear a kilt.

There are 6 copies of Dileas for sale on Abe‘s Books prices range from $95 to $200.
To learn more of the 1st Bn during WWII go to: http://dileas.mapleleafup.org
This web site is still a work in progress and hopefully once the D Day events are concluded my ISP will get more of the story up.
I‘ll leave you with a comment made by a British Officer during WWII after the C.O. refered to the men of the Regiment as "members". " What is this a bloody club". Enough said.

Aye Dileas

The 48th Highlanders were actually recently awarded "The Key to the City," which is the highest award a municipality can give to a military unit, that should say plenty.
