Surface to Air Missiles have been a threat to aircraft for ages — but outside of MH-17 where GRU ‘reservists’ shot down the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777, and Iran Air Flight 655 A300 shot down by the USS Karl Vincenesse, there have not been any incidents.

Lets not forget Flight: PS752 was a passenger jet flying from Tehran, Iran, to Kyiv, Ukraine. Shot down by Iranian "Air Defense" near the airport it departed from.

I suspect if you started researching GPS enabled glide path, as well as some larger UAS, that someone may come and knock on your door.

Please keep in mind that the proliferation of abliterated AI's means someone could research and design an entire attack with an air gapped platform. Not to go into the specifics, but a thousand dollars and a few months of typical purchases could easily suffice for the lowest sophistication threat options. The sandbox architecture this approach provides also allows for the repurposing of unrelated hardware into threat material without triggering monitoring mechanisms.

Prevention efforts are probably best geared to humint resources rather than digital monitoring. Making amnesty focused deradicalization programs widely available would be an excellent first step. Formal guarantees of fair treatment, new starts, and non-prosecution are critical to reversing the sense of helplessness and abandonment which forces bad decisions.
