Hi all,

I'm in the application process right now for Canada and UK and I have one issue that I'm concerned about.  It concerns my eyesight, I searched through the forums for anything related to this and I couldn't find anything.  Basically, my problem is that I have a condition in my left eye called amblyopia, aka "Lazy Eye".  I can see fine with it, but its blurred and small letters and writing are pretty much a no go for me.  The good thing is, my right eye is perfectly fine and I in fact don't even wear glasses.  I know it sounds strange that I don't need corrective lenses but the way lazy eye goes is basically that my right eye does all the work and my left eye is well...lazy.  I can drive and read and eveything.  Now the reason this concerns me is because there are requirements for each specific eye (ie right eye must be correctible to so and so...left eye to so and so etc etc.).  So will my left eye bar me from entry even though my right eye is perfectly fine.

I wasn't really worried about this until my dad mentioned that it may be a problem for me getting in.  But on the flip side, I hadn't really thought about it because about 7 years ago, when I was leaving high school, I applied to RMC and I was accepted (I turned it down at the time though for personal reasons)....so up until now I figured to myself that it wasn't a big deal since I had already been accepted once, and I've had this condition my entire life.

To get to my point, will this be a problem for me now?  Does anyone know people in the CF with Lazy Eye or have it themselves?  Any help would be great.

Well the only thing I can see a problem for you on your medical is when you do your eye exam. They make you cover each eye seperatly and read off letters and numbers on a chart about 20 feet away. I'm sure if you can read off the numbers and letters with your left eye, it shouldnt be to much of a problem.

I have it but reversed.  My right eye is the lazy one, and I happen to be right handed, so I always thought that it would negatively affect my shooting.  I'm happy to say it hasn't, I still score marksman or close to it every time I do a PWT.  As for how it'll affect your application, it depends on how bad your condition is, and also what trade you're applying for.  For instance, if you wanted to be a pilot, you may as well forget about it.  If you're trying to get into the combat arms....the only way to really know is to go apply and see what happens.

they will make you do a vision test and as long as you do your good eye first then you will have the chart memorized and if need be you can just recite the letters backwards.. however.. this would not be honest and I wouldn't condone it myself...
