After BMQ but before Trades Training.

I've looked in the FAQ but couldn't find an answer.

After I finish my BMQ what do I do until my trades training starts? I'm going into the Air Force so I don't do the Soldier Qualification (I think). The recruiter told me that they don't know when my training starts after Basic. So what do I do until then? Do they send me home or just put me in a base somewhere?

Also, since I bring little of my personal clothing items to BMQ, will I have to buy a new set or just get them sent to me?

Thanks.

What trade are you? If you're a tech of some sort you'll probably get OJT at a Sqn somewhere to get a feel for what you'll be doing. I wouldn't start accumulating a whole bunch of stuff right away since you'll only get to CMTT (military shipping) a certain amount. I'm not sure what it is for NCMs but I know it's less than officers and we get 500lbs shipped for free. I'm not sure if you'll get a restricted move to Borden or not, but you will get a move at some point so try to make due if it's not right away, that way you've got way less kit to be hauling around the country.

Cheers

At the end of the application process, you'll receive a joining instruction package from
the CFRC.  It may include your posting message that will include your BMQ and
training unit info.

During BMQ, likely somewhere between the 7th and 9th week, you 'll get a meeting or more
information on your next posting and any alterations to your posting message.

After BMQ, or the next morning after BMQ, you'll be shipped to your training unit.  At that
time, you'll be placed on a PAT platoon until your next MOC course starts.  Its a temporary
placement like BMQ and you can apply for time-off while on PAT but you probably won't
want alot of stuff there.

After the course, depending on the MOC, you'll be transferred to your gaining unit for OJT.
At the gaining unit, you can arrange to ship your stuff and personal items to your PMQ or
barracks.

Hey,

Well after BMQ, most people go to CFB Borden to sit at the unit I'm on right now PRTC (Post Recruit Training Center) where I did SQ and got my 404 (military driving licence) You also do a bunch of taskings (read time fillers) for example we're MP dummies, I've gone and provided enemy force for the reservists at Ex. Stalwart Guardian in Petewawa which is fun. If you have more than three months to kill and you're just gonna be sitting around, definatly apply for OJT its a really good oppurtunity to see where your chosen career is going. Most people also use this time to go home finally and visit the folks which is great because the first few months of the military is pretty stressfull and whatnot. I'm just waiting out till Kingston for my trades and Borden isn't a bad place..just boring as hell lol. I guess Borden is as fun as you make it...Barrie is nearby so you can have fun there.

As for SQ. there has been a strange rumour floating around that Air might have to do SQ. I know this because there was 2 air force recruits on my SQ course in Meaford so....you never know. I also saw a navy guy there too...

Have fun

this is for Jutes,

Hey i read your posting and after BMQ every soldier of any trade does the SQ then you go about to your trades. You go to school to learn whatever you are pursusing most likely you will go to borden ontario. What are you taking in the airforce i was a structural tech then i switched to the army. when i did it i had to take the BMQ /SQ and then i went to school to learn my trade after that i did OJT with is on the job training for a while after that you do that then you graduate from your course and it is a long process depending on what you are taking.

I hope this helps

I know only 3 Air trades that need SQ; MSE OP, Comms Rsch;Medics.  That's it that's all.  For Navy its Comms Rsch and Medic.  All army trades need it, but some need it more than others.

The above link is from the Canadian Forces Recruiting website.  Use the drop down lists to choose which trade(s) you are interested in.  Click on it and you'll get a whole page which tells you just about everything you need to know about that trade without actually doing it. Element, Entry Plan, What They Do, Qualification Requirements,  yada yada yada.........and specifically what you were looking for,  what type of training is required for the position.  They are separated according to Reg Force Officer & NCM, and Res Force Officer & NCM positions.

As stated earlier, to my knowledge, only Army recruits are sent through SQ.  There may be special circumstances which dictate otherwise for some individuals, but I am not aware of any.

The navy has a course along the same vein as SQ, which is called NET(P), which used to be be called OSQ/AB.   Basically its a month long course in seamanship and includes subjects such as: knot tieing, cleaning stations procedures, basic c7 qualification, shipboard firefighting, shipboard flood control, NBCD, ships husbandry etc.   Everyone posted to a sea-going unit is required to take this course.   Most post-BMQ but pre-QL3 personnel will take this course shortly after they arrive in Esquimalt or Halifax, but some may take it after their QL3.
