Hi, I am applying to the Naval Reserves (HMCS Malahat). I have many questions and am in contact with a recruiter, who seems to be busy by e-mail, and I'd like to finish my application ASAP. If you have the time and the knowledge, it's much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your answers.
The CF career most appealing to me is (Nav)Int Officer. Because of the degree required and the fact it is not locally yet "Now Hiring," I am hesitant... Are the chances slim that I would be accepted if I don't yet have a degree and would need to complete that, i.e. Does anyone know if realistically only someone with higher qualifications would be likely to be accepted, rather than someone starting University?
What would the best career path be for someone wanting that end goal? To join as NCM now,as I plan to, complete degree, and "advance later?" Or would that be 'selling short,' and wasting time? I am planning to apply for NCI OP and NAVCOMM positions, both which interest me as well.
I feel cautious about applying as an Officer, since I expect the caliber of recruits to be tougher competition, and am unsure whether I'd be likely to be accepted on the basis of "my personality suiting it" when there'd be others with Bachelor's degrees already. On the other hand, I really would suit decision-making and team-leading. > How much weight is given to academics and past supervisory roles versus so-called "potential" in reviewing Officer applications? I am a more analytical than technical person, and feel my contribution would be most in a position that reflects this. My resume does not reflect this feeling! which is why I would opt for a NCM trade, with eyes to eventual Int Officer conversion (maybe Regular?).
Questions on References:
- The form says "5 continuous years or since age 16" -- I assume that's "the PAST 5 years" as in, not just any 5 continuous yrs...?
- Can my Employment and Professional References be the same? i.e. Can I place the names of people I've worked for in the required-4-references area?
- Could I name additional references who've known me less than the required #of yrs below the required 4 references who meet the duration criteria? (Not worth it?)
- What will and won't my references be asked? i.e. More their general opinions and dealings with me (character-reference) --or-- also to verify my education, my fitness, any medical issues, etc. (verifying information)?
- In other words, how extensive should their knowledge of me be and how much time does it cost them?
Thanks again for skimming through this -- Sorry it's extensive and redundant. Any insight or advice is valued.
