Just seeking info...
On strength, the CF has 114 Leopard MBTs. Yet each of the three armoured
regt‘s has only one squadron of 20 vehicles. So where the **** are the
other fifty-four? Something doesn‘t add up.
On the Armoured Combat Vehicle project replacing the Cougars and maybe the
Leos in the future, does anyone know what the competion is and what the
most likely candidate looks to be? Thanks for any help.

Our Amd. Regts have only 20 tanks each? I am confused by this, if we have
the tanks, why not use them.

The leopards servered mainly in Europe with 8th Canadian Hussars
doctrinally it would be 78 Tanks, but, I‘m not sure if they had the
full 4 squadrons 19 tks/sqn and 2 tanks for the CO and Adjt and a
squadron in Gagetown at the Combat Training Centre for advanced
training. The remaining tanks were at the EME schools, etc. Please
note that the other Regular Force Armd Regts used Cougars basically a
tank trainer that somehow wound up in Croatia, Bosnia, and Somalia.
Currently, the remaining three armoured regts have i believe 15 tanks
in their tank squadron. The reamining two squadrons in the Regiment
not including the Coyote equipped Recce Sqn are/will be outfitted with
Coyote or LAV III to train on. As of 1999, all cougars have been
retired from service Reserves still use them.
Now, you ask, if we have 114 tanks and our three Regiments have 15 each
total 45...there are alot of tanks missing! Once again, I believe the
squadron 8 CH in Gagetown is still owns a full 19 tanks...and there
are several with the EME schools etc. A large component of the
remainder are considered "war surplus" 20 are held in Wainwright.
They are being used to send them to refit for the Leopard turrent
upgrade program that will see all the leapard turrents upgraded with
state of the art fire control systems and night vision capability.
Hope this helps.

A large portion is out for upgrading, and 2nd and 3rd line maintenance. So
we actually do keep extra, so out regt‘s always have thier full complement.
I‘m impressed our government bought enough to do this. Maybe there is some
hope.
Thanks gunner!
