Well is it true that the rumore that Army cadets can where cat pat??? :cdn: ???

OK, the official position, from what I understand, is that army cadets can technically wear anything, if it is on an exercise.   If they want, they can wear flaming pink tutus.   Cadets are civilians.   End of story.   Just don't mix uniform pieces with the civilian clothes.   As an example, don't wear your beret with the afore-mentioned tutu, and everyone will be happy.

Now, obviously, most of the cadets are interested in going out and getting gear that emulates the Canadian soldier (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery).   What this meant in the past was going out and getting either Olive Green combats, usually from a surplus store, sometimes 'borrowing' big brother's or dad's gear for the weekend.   This was the pants, shirt, boots, and I have seen a few cadets using the old garrison Camoflauge jackets.

Now, with the introduction of CADPAT, it gets everyone all worked up in a tizzy.   Because of the 'special properties' of the material, it takes a bit longer to produce, and add on that a large ground force operation in Afghanistan, amongst other places, and you have some, not necessarily shortages, but items are taking longer to get out there to the folks who actually need these items first.   This is why CADPAT is such a hot topic on this message board, and probably others.

Combats are NOT, officially, issued to cadets.   If your unit issues you combats, that is an individual unit's thing, those clothes are paid for from funds from the Sponsoring Committee, not National Defence.   Your dress uniform (Beret, Tunic Green shirt, Pants, Boots, Necktie, sweater, runners, Tilley hat, runners, parka, etc) ARE paid for with federal funding.   That is why you don't have to pay to be a cadet.

As far as CADPAT goes, there are two 'versions' out there.   You can buy the 'real' stuff from many surplus stores, though, apparently they're not supposed to have it either, or you can purchase the Frontenac stuff, or other knock-off items.

At our unit, our policy is as follow:   Cadets can wear combats on specially designated evenings (shooting, bushcraft, 'dirty' stuff), where their regular dress uniform would get dirty, or boots dinged.   And those combats have to be either old style olive green, new style (legitimately acquired   ;D) CADPAT, or imitation CADPAT, and all 'Adult' insignia has to be removed, including the Canada flags on the left shoulder, and they have to wear their CADET slip-ons on the epaulets.   On exercises, the policy is the above, plus they can wear American and British stuff if they really want to.

Of course, every unit is different, I have heard of a few units that actively discourage combats of any kind, others that let anything go, units that purchase combats for re-sale to their cadets, those that issue combats as part of the cadets' initial issue.

Basically, the answer to this question boils down to:   find out what is the standard at your unit, and stick to that as much as you can.

And of course, remember, have fun :warstory:

Cheers
