Canada to Spend $5.0Bil on AEW Aircraft (Saab Globaleye)

I was really hoping for the Phoenix. But our NATO refocus seems to be driving the GlobalEye.

I'm just glad a decision has been made. Now lets get these things in the air and working for us.
I feel this decision reduces the chance of a Gripen buy, or at least reduces the number. It's a win for Saab (and Europe), which from Carney's perspective is an important consideration. I would not be surprised an F35 announcement will be favourable to the US.

I would have preferred the EA7 politics be damned if only this one time.
The Wedgetail has one great advantage over the Globaleye. Endurance, you will note that I didn't say range. Because that's something different.

Hopefully the Canadian Govt can manage to integrate air to air refueling into the GlobalEye, an AEW aircraft on the ground might as well not be one. We're also going to lose out on proper datalinks to AEGIS and F-35 with GlobalEye unless everybody agrees to integrate MADL.

For the record, info-machine version of the Saab announcement:

Based on what? They are close. The biggest problem is AAR. Hopefully ours will be AAR capable.

Agreed.

I know some of the project staff. Absolutely sucks getting a political decision forced on your project. But I guess such are the times. And we should be happy that we're finally getting a sovereign AEW capability.

I also know a lot of ABMs aren't going to be happy giving up those OUTCANs at Tinker and Elmendorf for North Bay.

Really hope we're going to lead some kind of NRE effort to incorporate AAR, MADL and possibly even an improved sensor, that we can share with NATO.

I am really curious how security and certification will be managed with this. Needs to be CAN/US for NORAD. But so much is sourced from Sweden.

You can carry a replacement crew and possibly some techs as well. There are other ways of increasing endurance aside from refueling.
Also you can more capabilities far easier given the larger size of the aircraft.
