The CRDS is a new fleet of lightweight hand-held detectors designed for providing close support radiation surveys, monitoring, triage, contamination checks and reconnaissance. It’s smaller and lighter than each of the previous legacy systems. This consolidation of systems reduces the burden on the operator in the field and helps streamline training and logistical support functions.
This initiative was stood up as part of the CRDS project – a joint development project between the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. The CRDS project first began its delivery of CRDS training kits in August and fully completed initial cadre training in October.
Canada has now received the first 21 systems of an anticipated 1100. With this step complete, full-scale procurement, distribution, training, and deployment may commence.
