CFB TRENTON — Support, recognition and respect are familiar words for the 1st Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Unit riders (1 CAV).
On Wednesday though, those words were spoken to describe the patriotic bikers themselves, all of them Canadian Forces veterans from Trenton and Kingston chapters of 1 CAV.

During an annual awards ceremony held at the Astra Lounge at CFB Trenton — where Forces personnel and local business owners are recognized for their actions and involvement in the community — 8 Wing-CFB Trenton Commander Col. Mike Hood presented a special certificate of recognition to 1 CAV's vice-president Bill 'Drifter' Truman.

Drifter, as he likes to be called, accepted the framed certificate on behalf of all his motorcyclist comrades.

"Getting an award like this is not about the CAV members in particular but it's rather about our troops," said Drifter. "It's a real honour for the CAV and all its members."

According to Drifter, CAV's members focus their efforts on supporting Canadian troops posted around the world as well as showing respect to the families affected by the loss of their spouses, sons, daughters and friends.

"We've made sure to attend every one of the repatriation ceremonies, 116 as of today," said Drifter. "And to to receive an award like this today is another way for us to pay respect to all the military families and their great losses."

The riders of the 1st Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Units (1 CAV) aren't a gang and they're not a club. They are a group of veterans, current troops and supporters who aid anyone with military ties whenever and wherever needed.

As many as 65 riders from Toronto to western Quebec have attended a single repatriation, lining up along what Kingston's Vimy unit has named Repatriation Row — the stretch of Highway 2 dividing CFB Trenton.

The 1 CAV was founded about five years ago by Kingston residents Yannick Lebrun and Paul "Trapper" Cane, now the national president.

Members of the 1 CAV have served in every theatre of military operations, either in peace or at war; as members of NATO, the United Nations or members of Canada's present army, navy or air force.

Since its inception, the 4,000-plus members – which are organized through dozens of units scattered across the country, including Trenton's Juno unit – have raised more than $4 million for causes in support of veterans.
