What would the duties and responsibilities be of a Company Quartermaster Sargent in the Infantry in Italy during the second world war.  How many CQMS would be in each regiment? Would they be involved in action?
I am researching the Irish Regiment's role.
Thanks

The CQMS would be ranked as a staff sergeant (three stripes and a crown), and there would be one per company - A, B, C, D and Support Company.  In action, he would remain with B Echelon IIRC.  He would keep the company stores organized while the CSM (Company Sergeant Major) ensured that ammunition, food, water and other essentials flowed between the CQMS and the fighting troops.  They would normally not participate in the fighting and for administrative purposes I suppose they were considered part of Company Headquarters, though they were located to the rear of the firing line.

Michael has pretty well covered it. As well, being the next senior Senior NCO after the CSM, the CQMS normally acted as the CSM if that soldier was absent.  Cheers.
