Hey guys, I am very interested in joining the Canadian Forces.  I am deciding between Reserve and Regular, but I am a little confused about the pay.  I looked at the charts, but I am wondering if on the reserve, do you get paid for training, and after that, can you work 5 days a week or more?  I tried emailing the forces, but they were very vague about it.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

When people join the forces it's becouse that's what they what to do, and not about how much pay !, it's a gut feeling !.
You sound like it's all about money ?, the army is a life some people cann't handle, you have it or you don't !. People should not join for the money !, we don't need people like that !

Oh my!  That is so not it!  I have a job right now, but if I quit and join the army, I don't want to leave my sister paying for our house all by herself.  I'm so sorry I offended you.  Thats not what my intentions are.  I want to join to be a part of the defence of our country, I just want to make sure I am able to support myself still.  And that is why I need to know if I should do reserve or regular force.

Reservists are, by and large, exclusively part-time.  You get paid by the half or full day, depending on how long you work.  For example, if you show up at what's called a "parade night", and work for three hours, you'll get a half day's pay.  If you work on Saturday or Sunday, you'll get full-day's pay for each day.  Reserves generally work one night a week and one weekend a month, although there is opportunity for longer callouts once you're fully trained.  If you're looking for full-time, you should be looking at the Regular Force.

I don't think you offended anyone.  Although there are many well intentioned people on this forum, if you are interested in joining your best course of action by far is to contact your nearest recruiting centre and go talk to someone there. There are several recruiters who are regulars here and Kincanucks (although I believe he has moved from a direct recruiting role)  has proven to be an invaluable source of information on a wide variety of subjects.

There will always be people who complain the recruiters don't know what is going on, but in my experience anyone who tells you they have had a bad experience in a recruiting centre more then likely brought it upon themself.

In a nutshell read as much as you can on this forum but go see a recruiter if you are interested.

Good Luck!

If you want to retain your well paying civy job & join the military then the Reserves is the way to go.
If you want to quit your good paying civy job and go military full time then the Regular force is the way to go.

Regs are paid a monthly rate - you can refer to those on the Recruiting web site
Regs are paid a daily rate.....
- while working part time, .5, 1, 1.5, 2 or 2.5 days (refer to rate tables) you are paid an additional 9% per day, in lieu of vacation.
- while working full time, you are paid for the full block - 7 days a week - though given weekends off and 2 days vac per month.... included in said block.

Trinity I get right on that !
I didn't know I was getting marked for my grammar, spelling, and sentence structure !
I was blowing thing's up when you were making a mess in your pants !
Where where you when I was in the first Gulf War ?
P.S- I Did a spell check !
When I joined we didn't ask about the pay ! (1981)

First off, congratulations on your desire to join the forces. May I suggest that you join a reserve unit first, this would allow you to see if you enjoy the military lifestyle, and would not drastically change your current financial position. If you then found that you do in fact enjoy the reserve's you could then decide whether to pursue a full time career. Just as an aside, not all people are cut out for the life, and do not pass basic training or whatever it's called now.

Regards
