Remembering the battle at Dieppe, 67 years later
Full Article
It’s dawn on Aug. 19, 1942. Approximately 5,000 Canadian soldiers are preparing to invade the German-occupied port of Dieppe, France.
The objective is to briefly invade and destroy predetermined targets and return to England as quickly as possible in the hopes that it would cause the German Army enough concern to strengthen its defence of the English channel and pull resources from elsewhere.
What happened was one of the worst disasters of the Second World War.
The plan called for attacks at five different points along a 16-kilometre stretch of coastline. Four simultaneous attacks were supposed to go in just before dawn, followed 30 minutes later by the main attack on the town of Dieppe. The Allies were depending on surprise and darkness for success.
