DIN/DWAN search

It is not just you, I have never had much luck using it.  What are you looking for perhaps I could help you?

It's not any one item, it just seems that every time I search for something instead of giving me the main DIN page it returns a bunch of random documents.

I find Google works better - often giving DND internet sites with the info I want, and much less hassle than DWAN search.

Though, with the CFAOs off the itnernet, it's now sometimes a little less helpful.

Speaking of which, why did they take the CFAO's off? It was always interesting to read through them, when a Google search would pull one up.

CFAOs are off the internet because the formatting does not meet the new Common Look and Feel for Gov't of Canada internet sites.

So, rather than providing useful information to service members, it's been pulled awaiting time and money to reformat it.

A triumph of form over function; and no "leadership" in DND/CF to say "Hello, TBS.  We know it's not CLF compliant, but we're leaving it up until we can upgrade it, as these are important documents our service personnel need to do their work."

Cowardly wankers (cue "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat" from Guys and Dolls)

If this was a perfect system they would contract Google to setup up the DIN search engine.

Google does offer a search appliance that plugs in to your network and creates an intranet google search capability.

However, it would be of limited utility in DND, as our intranet is heavily restricted.  Google's value on the WWW is that they can see weightings of links to sites to determine their relative value - if 100 people link to a site it's probably of greater value than if 10 people do.  The DWAN, lacking any ability of people to post "My favourite links" or some such wouldn't get as much out of Google as it might.

(This does beg the question, whether DND needs internal resources for social networking - maybe Mike, our genial host, could sell Army.ca to the Army or something  >:D )

I do recall this being an April Fools joke a few years ago...
